Must Read
This book was very informative. I learned a lot more about the history of Deaf/HOH African Americans and their language. How it has been influenced and developed through the years. The videos with the book gave such an amazing experience. Definitely, one for the home library.

excellent research to explain the Black ASL variant
this book starts with the history of segregated education system and how this led to a separation in teaching methodologies between schools for white and “negro” students. This is a fascinating insight and should be studied by everyone.the research then flows into what a variant (dialect) means and how can it be determined if Black ASL qualifies as a variant. for these chapters, I highly recommend watching the associated videos. The book walks us through the study process, local and age differences, and a final conclusion.I have sincerely enjoyed this book, you can tell by the dog eared pages in the photo. If you like. this book, consider donating to Gallaudet’s Center for Black Deaf Studies.

An excellent read
Dr. Carolyn and her team did a great job in offering these perspectives. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. It was priced very reasonably. I encourage other young, black deaf and interpreters to invest in this book.i

Understanding the differences of Black ASL versus White ASL
I chose this book because I am learning American Sign Language (ASL). I was curious to find what were the differences between white ASL signers and black ASL signers. Reading the book alone, I was not understanding the information because it is presented in a scientific manner which can be confusing at times if you are not inclined to science. As I looked at the DVD, everything became clearer and I began to understand the purpose of the scientific study of the differences between white ASL signers and black ASL signers. This book is informative and its explains in detail the cultural differences of white ASL signers and black ASL signers. If you are interested in learning more about ASL, this book is for you. I am happy that I purchased this book because it broaden my mind to the beautiful language that is ASL (American Sign Language).
