Painting Miniature Military Figures (A Schiffer Book for Hobbyists)

For beginners only
An interesting book of techniques, but only for beginners. If you are more than a basic beginner (you have attempted more than a half dozen simple miniatures) this book will disappoint you. You would be better served to look on line for U-Tube lessons.

Good info for the intermediate to advanced figure painter
This book provides a lot of information about detailing, highlighting, and shading resin and metal figures. It's not designed for wargaming. The preferred medium is oil paints, which kind of dates the publication, since acrylic paints and inks by companies like Vallejo have pretty much taken over. That said, there is good information regarding the sequence of construction, priming, and painting Civil War era figures. This is not for the beginner, but it is a worthwhile addition to my library. I'm including a couple of pictures of my completed figures from the same manufacturer.

This would have been a great book 20 years ago
This would have been a great book 20 years ago, however since it was first published in 1994 techniques and paints have moved on. It is an excellent guide if you want to paint your figures in oils, but nowadays a lot of people will use acrylics. The photos are excellent and there is no doubting the authors talents with model soldiers, but as a recent returnee to model making, after 30 years, I was looking for something to help me bring myself up to date. Having since purchased one of the more modern books from Mr Black Publications (Scale Model Handbook - WW 2 Special Volume 2) I would suggest that while they are more expensive, these are better guide for the modern model maker.

Very good
Very good book, especially for those, like me, that never built or paint a figure. Reading this book the technique become very easy. Racomended for the beginners! The four stars are not for the book (it should have 5 stars!) but for the late (15 days) for receiving the book probably for the mail, not for the seller.
