About Habitats: Mountains

My 2yo loves it, so do I
This is a great introduction to mountains. My 2yo daughter loves this book. She even says “plate 1” and “plate 2” while turning through the pages. Love that it incorporates animals and mountain landscapes all over the world. The mountain goats are our favorite!! I hope this inspires an affinity for hiking and traveling in her :)

Okay, not great
I really liked the pictures; they were very well done, but I would have liked more text explaining mountains. Text was limited. There wasn't nearly enough information for my 3rd grade class. Still, the paintings are well done showing the types of animals and plants that live there. It's a good backup or supplemental book, but I wouldn't use it as my main instructional text.

One couldn't find a better source for introductory information about a habitat than the Sills volumes. One gets the basic knowledge in a clear, concise way with beautiful illustrations and then more information in the back if desired.

Beautiful and educational for the preschool set
We love this series of books. The words are simple, but the drawings are beautiful complex, and our son finds something new in successive readings. I'm thrilled to have such a nice ecology book for our three-year-old.

This book is a keeper! It is a nonfiction book about nature. The pictures in this book are great. Kids will love discovering the animals and plants that live in the mountains. They will also like imagining that they are going on hiking adventures in the different mountain ranges. Whether you like jungles, forests, or snow, this book has something for you. If you like volcanoes, this book is for you too. My favorite mountain is the one made of three inactive volcanoes. This book is as good as the forest book in the About Habitats series.By Henry L., age 6, North Texas Mensa

Beautifully illustrated non-fiction book
Another fascinating illustrated book by John Sill and written by Cathryn Sill. In this book, About Habitats: Mountains, each colorfully illustrated plate includes a different mountain or mountain range, including animals and plants that exist in this habitat. Cathryn Sill's characteristically short one sentence annotations in large text, describe each full page plate which makes a good presentation for a classroom read aloud. It is ideal for a lower elementary report. An Afterword describes more elaborately in paragraphs each plate's illustration. A Glossary and Websites are useful, as is a world spread of continents outlining mountains and mountain ranges featured in this book.
