Not new; some tubes were opened
Almost half of the tubes had been previously opened; seal was broken. Package was squished and box containing paints was broken so the tubes were all loose in the soft envelope they were shipped in.

Great brushes
Love these brushes. The box arrived crushed, which really isn't the fault of the seller, but I wish they would ship it in a box rather than a padded mailer. If I had received this "uncrushed," I would have given this 5 stars.

Great value for the price
Great value for the price. I compared them with my Daniel Smith (DS) colors and took a photo of my color study. The columns in the left show Daler Rowney (DR) colors and the right columns show my Daniel Smith colors (color study with wet on wet and dry brushes). Although their colors are not as vibrant and heavily pigmented as DS colors, they are definitely the second best with pretty good amount of pigments. I bought 6 color (5ml each) DS set for 25 USD and 8 color and 24 color (12 ml each) DR set for 18 USD. Considering the price, they offer great value and great range of colors. When used with dry brushes, they act more like gouache paints and very opaque (not good for dry brush techniques). I use this set as my practice set for my watercolor studies and save DS colors for special projects since DS colors are very expensive. In my opinion, this is definitely the best set to buy for the beginners and best practice set for more advanced watercolorists.

Not worth the money
While these paints are very inexpensive, I don’t think they would be good even for beginners. The paints have a slimy texture and do not behave like true watercolors. They never firmed up even after leaving them open for a week. I returned them. I bought a travel set of Daler-Rowney artist cakes and they were great. Do not buy these for anyone who wants to paint with watercolors.

Long shipping time but beautiful paints.
I have used these before and love them so much I decided to buy more. The colors are vibrant and thick and if you want to dry them onto a palette for later easier use, these are perfect for that. They do not crack or fall off any surface. The only reason I knocked it off a star is because it took several months to get to me. Even during these tough times, that's a little crazy for Amazon. But I still highly recommend.

Beautiful colors for a great value
I bought these along with an empty palette so I don't have to deal with digging around with several tubes. If you use for the same reason it is safe to say that each tube fills roughly have a pan when completely dry and they work great.Like any paints you buy in tubes they do have a lot of air in them, so I would proceed with caution when punching open the tubes to get the paint. These paints still have a great selection of color and are smooth to work with.Of course they are not "professional" paints so they do look a little pale until you really work with them. But they are great paints if you would like to start learning to work with watercolors or just don't want to splurge on paints.I personally love them and plan to buy more of these paints when my pans run low.

Terrible quality and results.
I normally have loved Daler Rowney brand products, but these chalky paints were very low color strength, some colors 'mealy,' some were only possible to mix to a nearly imperceptibly light tint, and all were varying levels of opaque, with none being the transparent color one expects from watercolor. Crayola preschooler paints have more color strength & transparency than these. Very disappointing - I would not even think of frustrating a small child with these, much less an adult or promising student painter.

Easy to blend and easy to use.

Cheap and cheerful
Easy to use, good price and wide range of colours but difficult to blend so brush strokes can be seen on the picture. Also small specks in the paint that can stay on the paper.

Pretty good paints!
Daler-Rowney's essential paints were the first I used when learning. I liked the way they handled, and return to them when I want a change from Windsor and Newton Cotman pans. My paints were a bit older and had the silver packaging on them, but they weren't Aquafine or Artist quality. The other reviewer who had a negative experience from the maker needs to make their feelings known in a formal complaint to the firm.I'd also question whether THEY demanded their students get new paints, or if the students indepently found these paints to be poor. And it can be a faulty batch if the paints are purchased at the same time from different shops - that's how batches work, after all.If you're unsure, try a small sample of 6 tubes and see how you like them. Or if you're not keen, try looking for the Aquafine ones. They handle really nicely, and I'm using a set quite happily at the moment. And I'll be clear here - there are much worse paints you can wind up with, believe me.

Good value
Not really sure what the “sheerness” rating means? That’s new to me. But this set of paints was perfectly adequate for a watercolour course I recently started.
