Perfect for any aspiring Myrmecologist!
My partner loves ants. Ants are a special interest of his, so I knew I could blow him away by getting one of the most well-known books on ants. This book doesn't disappoint, as it breaks down ants even on a molecular level. He recently started a college class, and the professor was so impressed with the knowledge he had learned from this book that he went out and bought one for himself.

Remarkable accomplishment; yet still more to add
Just how many species of ants can there be? Aren't they all the same? They all eat sugar, right? Do some ants sting or do all of them? Are there some poisonous ants? Well, if you ever wondered about questions like these, and wanted to get more complete answers than anything on the internet, then this book is for you to savor. THE ANTS contains the full story of ants in general, and then many specific stories of the 30,000 known and yet to be known species. Written by two very well-respected and well-known life-long biology researchers, it is written accurately, precisely, and accessibly so that whether you're an insect dilettante or researcher there is surely something in it for you.The coffee-table sized book runs 732 pages, 20 chapters, and includes a glossary and an extensive annotated bibliography. The text is fully indexed, and includes about one thousand illustrations, photographs, graphs, and charts, and includes 24 full-color plates. It is a pleasure to read, and a book that you will enjoy owning, reading, re-reading, and referring to for years to come. One of my favorite books and highly recommended... - lc

Empire of the Ants
Wow. I've wanted this book ever since I browsed through it years ago at the Raven bookstore in Harvard square. I decided to spoil myself and am so happy I did. Even for a layman it is fascinating. It's informative but still approachable. Non fiction rarely succeeds so well at revealing a hidden world full of wonders. If you study of keep ants, enjoy science, or even science fiction, you will be amazed by this book. It's expensive but just bite the bullet (ant) and thank me later.

Amazing
I have read a few reviews of this book in the past and they fell into two categories. Either people who had training in this field who loved it, or people who picked it up because it was an award winner or looked interesting and hated it. Well let me give you some background. I'm 14, very interested in ants, and think this book is great. However, it is all about your view. First of all, it isn't a light read. I haven't taken any entomology courses and can enjoyably read it, but having a computer close by to look up words is essential. If you are not interested in ants, then this book isn't for you. Secondly, I do not suggest treating it like a chapter book. It is long and technical, making it like reading and encyclopedia. That brings me to my next point. I like to treat this book as an ant reference. If something specific comes up, you can flip to the index and quite miraculously, it's there. I mean really specific. For example; I recently collected a specimen of Sturimigensys louisianae (that's misspelled), and there was a section on them! So if you are interested in ants, this is a great book.

Ants rule?
Fascinated by insect survival in difficult environments, Ants has information on all aspects of their lives in one place. Cockroaches are keen competitors for the top ability to win through. A wonderful reference book that is an interesting read.

The Bee's Knees of Ant Books
For me, what fig trees are to the plant world, in terms of adaptive strategies, ants are to fauna; they have fascinated me since I was a child, squatting in the garden to watch them go about their business. And this is the book I have been searching and waiting for about ants ever since then. If you are a non-biologist who is curious about the natural world this is a captivating book, that you can open at any page and read with pleasure and profit for as little or as long as you like. Discover life on another planet - the one you thought was yours.

Fantastic
I bought this book as a gift for my son. He's been taking it out of the library for years and always wanted a copy for himself. I'm personally not into ants the way he is but what a beautiful book. It's long been a favorite in our home and although it's a bit expensive, it's well worth the price.
