Really good but full warning
It will make you hungry watching this. Great dark comedy about dieting and finding love at the same time. Who doesn’t love Dom, guy is funny.

A fun romp!
I loved this movie since I first saw it in the early 1980s on t.v. Yes the characters are Italian and Dom's character is overweight, but it does not make fun of these people. I'm part Italian and overweight myself, and I'm not offended. (I'm too busy laughing!)

If You Want to Know What It's Like to Be Italian, Watch This Movie
'Fatso' is unquestionably the most Italian movie out there. What I mean is that when you watch this movie, you experience the many ways that Italians live, love, interact with family, and take part in the world. There are so many parallels to real Italians it's uncanny. Some examples:- The opening funeral scene with Dom's cousin Salvatore (just the names are enough!!)- The way in which food is used to calm down Dom as a young boy, and how he uses it to calm himself down as an adult- The family's life in New York- The relationship between Dom, his brother Frankie, and his sister AntoinetteThe movie is funny, sad, heartwarming, and so many other emotions. The performances are outstanding. First, there's the late great Dom Deluise playing a character which is, essentially, himself. He is so realistic you feel you are truly watching Dominic DiNapoli and not the actor who is portraying him. Then there's Ron Carey, who plays Dom's younger brother Frankie. Carey does such a good job that you really think the two are brothers in real life. Finally, there's the acting genius of the late Anne Bancroft. She plays sister Antoinette to a 'T' in so many ways. I especially was touched by how she showed both anger and love towards her brother and how her ranting and raving are such a memorable part of the movie.Besides the 'Italian angle', there are so many other great things in this movie, including the Chubby Checkers (hysterical), 'get the honey junior', the 'candle snuffer outer', and the romance between Dom and Lydia. It just goes on and on!This is such a great movie in so many ways, you have to see it. It may have not made too much of a splash when it was out, but it's surely one of the best, most realistic movies ever. It's a favorite of mine and hopefully will become a favorite of yours.

The Best Italian-American film ever!
food, personalities, family, religion, food, Brooklyn, marriage, funerals, relationships, food. Dom delouse, Candice, Anne Bancroft. a small budget film with a director and actors who know what they are doing, making the most of lighting, location and the story they are conveying. This is one of my top films and one that I can watch over and over. when I want to introduce acquaintances to the Italian American persona I have a movie night with this movie and It always works out great. read the longer reviews and what people say, this is what its like to be Italian American( or what it was maybe). Dom performance is on top and this may be one of his best ever. an incredible ahead-of-its-time comedy that focuses on everything from sadness and cultural isolation to the weight-loss movement and sad loss of self-worth. with all the times I have watched this film I still get something new from it every time. I would love to see a top notch treatment of this DVD with plenty of extras, the possibilities of course would be endless.

Laugh-out-loud funny!
I probably first saw this when it came out and have enjoyed it even since. All of the characters are so funny and if you and/or anyone you know has gone thru trying to lose weight then it will be even funnier because you will remember thinking these things or seeing/hearing other people express these thoughts/actions. And in the beginning when they go to the funeral of a family friend and the casket it gigantic (because the cousin was obese) it was hilarious. Loved it!

True to Italian
Why in God's name is this film so unheralded? Maybe it's meant to be the cult classic that it is -- which means it's time Fatso gets the whole nine yards DVD treatment! Like most of the reviewers, I can relate to much of the Italian family-and-food scenarios being from Brooklyn. Like one reviewer said, forget the Godfather, Sopranos and all the mob stuff. This is ONE film about Italians that truly depicts them in positivity. Get a bunch of friends on a Saturday night with a few bottles of wine and a bowl, not a plate, of pasta and watch this. All of the characters are tremendously endearing, and there are equally heart string-pulling moments and funny ones. "Get the honey, Junior" should be up with the great movie quotes of all time. If there's any movie that should be re-visited in these image-conscious times, it's this one. How beloved is it? In memory of my father, who introduced the film to our large Italian-Irish family, we organized a "Fatso" party where we served food seen/eaten/talked about in the film (including buttered beets and kale), with looping showings of the movie all day. Someone please recognize this great and lovely film!! Where's the DVD? Someone call Anne Bancroft now!!
