The best!
I'm a huge fan of Matt James and this book is by far one of the best gardening design books I've read! It's just wonderful. I've also purchased it as a gift.

Ok I was expecting a garden to be eatable food ...
Ok I was expecting a garden to be eatable food. My wife walked by and horse laughed and asked if I was going to eat hedges or flowers.I consider this a landscape book instead of a traditional garden book. Live and learn!!!

My all-time favourite gardening book (and I have many)
The best gardening book I have ever owned. Useful and beautiful, it has a fresh approach that means I did not skip the first few chapters as I do with most other gardening books because they all seem to just churn out the same old information. This leads the reader on a wonderful garden journey, culminating in detailed planting schemes that I will most certainly be adopting in my garden. If I had to choose one gardening book for life, this would be it. Thank you, Matt James.

As a landscape design student I was recommended this book
As a landscape design student I was recommended this book. I put it off as the RHS title made me believe it would just be another traditional english horticulture book giving their idea of 'proper' horticulture. However, after briefly reading it in the library and ordered it straight away. I now wish I had this at the start of the studies. It is an invaluable resource for students of landscape design. It includes information on a wide variety of planting styles with beautiful well thought images and diagrams which help in communicating the designs. Highly recommended!

Some Useful Ideas.
Books on garden design are generally infuriating. Outside somewhere I have been required to pay to enter, I have yet to see a garden that remotely resembles the beautifu , manicured examples that fill gardening books. This book is not free from these charges but there are some useful tips as well. One of the difficulties is that like most of these books this one presents us with a range of styles, only one, if that, which is likely to be of much practical use to the individual. Therefore, most of the book is redundant. This is better than some but nothing out of the ordinary.

Buy the hardcover version if you can
I downloaded this as a Kindle book but wish I'd bought the paper book now instead. There are lots of lovely pictures but on a phone you cannot easily flick between the pictures on a page and the narrative on the facing page that explains them. Planting plans would have been useful to help illustrate what the author describes.

A must for a new garden
Recommended to me by professional landscapers. Gave me good ideas for colour schemes, types of plants etc. An excellent recommendation. Very informative clear book.
