Lot of finalized landscape and scenery, minimal concepts
With the linear game progression organization of the Gears 4 artbook to the now all encompassing grouping of assets, it seems they can't nail down what they want to do with this new generation of Gears artbooks. The majority of the book is combined into a "The World" section which involves most locations that appear in the game from campaign to multiplayer maps. There is no breakup of this huge section however, just skipping to new areas in the way you first come across them within the campaign (for the most part) and then sticking the multiplayer maps at the end. The Escape gamemode "follows" the multiplayer maps but is broken into "Tileset" areas (something that makes sense but a little jarring when you just breeze through or if you aren't familiar with the game). The entire World section should've really included simple page breakups with a spanning image and title card of what's coming up. There were numerous double page artworks throughout the book but they were strewn about at what feels like random. There were a couple building section outlines in the cityscapes but nothing about unused assets or failed designs. I noticed much more interesting things walking around in-game than what any of these individual area segments showed in this book. They talk about a trip the art team did for inspiration but don't show any true trialing from said trip, so it doesn't really help from an outsider perspective of what they actually got out of it.The "Characters" section is abysmal. Each main character gets a spread including their final model (an entire page) and their clothing changes that appear in the game. There are few, if any, very slight iterations on designs for each character, with Del and Marcus getting only one page each. The locusts (ahem sorry, Swarm) was barely better. Each main version (drone, sniper, etc.) gets the human treatment, a full page final model and their armor concepts. That is nice. Sadly, the only interesting enemies only get a single page, final model show. Really lame. I would have liked to see more concepts and ideas of all the swarm infestations for the DeBees, more Matriarch, etc. They didn't even have Kait's mom in the book, what the heck? They didn't have Paddick or any of the Carmines either. All around severely disappointing. The weapon and vehicle section is completely barebones. Final renders and drawings of everything except the Skiff. Jack's images were nice drawings but nothing about his conceptual designs (he was kinda just a direct copy of before though so whatever).Slapped on at the end there was some marketing/icons section. Also barebones and only final renditions. All around not very happy with this book. The Gears 4 book, while not amazing, did try to show where they were coming from and provide a bit more insight with the commentary. This books commentary was almost nonexistent and what was there was borderline worthless. Almost no concepts, very little black and white drawings, nothing of note character wise, and not broken up or organized in a way that facilitates quick sit down reading. It's hard to even recommend this to hardcore fans, just play the game, you would get more out of that. The book itself is nice, a near guarantee from Dark Horse, so if it's for no other reason that completing collections and have nice looking shelf, yeah I suppose you could throw a bit of money to get this. I think the ice logo was one of the things they really nailed with Gears 5, I do quite like it. But honestly, I'd ignore this book unless you have a really good reason for it.

I love Gears of War
I love gears of war and I hope they don’t shy away from expanding the game. In Gears 5 we finally see new animations that give Gears a smoother and in my opinion a better look and feel. There were some short comings like the empty open world and rocky launch but in the end the game as a whole is solid. I would like them to give the open world aspect another go in Gears 6 with the experience they have gained from the past installment. More melee weapons too!

Not as informative as the last book, but far more pretty.
Ironically, an issue of mine with the previous "Art of" book to this presumable trilogy series of books, was that there wasn't much in the form of picturesque art. Now, they have VERY beautiful, grandious art...but, the book isn't as informative to the world of Sera, which may very well be due to how most of what could have resided within this book, is already explained within the pages of the last. That is not to say that it is a bore to page through, however. There is still information on a decent portion of new things, such as the design of a certain reborn city. Yet, these explanations feel shallow for other locations, not receiving nearly enough love, and only a very minor touch in description, relatively speaking. Their representation through wonderful art, though...excellent.

An affordable luxury.
Love Gears of War. Love Gears 5. I really like the art that eventually becomes a game. It's interesting to see how the ideas grow from sketches into characters. The book also makes for a good coffee table ornament.

Not quite what I expected, but still good
It’s a quality book with lots of professional artwork. I’d have liked a few more preliminary sketches to show their method and exploration of ideas. You mostly get a bunch of finished artworks. Also a major gripe for me is 70% of the book is environmental art with a small portion for characters, weapons, vehicles and items at the back of the book with the Swarm characters literally just showing the final game design; no alternate versions. A decent art book but I own quite a few now and this is definitely one of my least favourite. Pains me say as a big Gears fan but keep these criticisms in mind when buying.
