Works Great...With The Right Flash Drive
Of all the analog to digital video converters I have tried over the years, this is, without a doubt, the easiest to use and best thought-out of them all. I highly recommend it, but I also suggest you read ahead and take my advice into consideration. After converting my first dozen tapes, I started playing them back and was devastated to see that the AUDIO was WAY out of sync with the video, and I mean WAY out! I tried re-syncing the audio and video with editing software, but it was too inconsistent and I gave up. Calling Diamond's tech support loomed like a nightmare to me, but to my great surprise, I immediately found myself on the line with Louis, an English-speaking tech who took a genuine interest in my problem. Louis advised that he hadn't heard of this problem before, but he offered to replace the unit, no further questions asked. First, he requested that I try capturing to a different flash drive. This seemed like a waste of time, and I almost had the unit packed and ready to ship when I decided to pull out a high-quality Samsung USB 3.1 drive that I had paid $15 for. I plugged it in to the Diamond VC500ST and formatted it with the menu, then I proceeded to re-convert a 2 hour VHS tape that had transferred out of sync a week earlier. This time, using the Samsung flash drive, the video and audio transferred in perfect sync! So now my opinion of the Diamond VC500ST has gone from 3 stars to 5 and, although I am miffed that I have to re-convert all those tapes, I look forward to using it to convert many more hours of nostalgic and historic VHS tapes. Bottom line: Spend a few bucks and buy this machine, but DO NOT skimp on the flash drive. You'll need a large one, but don't go cheap!

Great Tool For Converting Old Home Movies
You cant beat this for the price, it worked great and I noticed the Firmware that shipped on mine was from 2021. Some of the complaints on here deal with the video editing software that comes bundled with this device and in no way should reflect on how this devices works. If you need something that quickly converts video tape to a MP4 file, this is for you. This is perfect for older tapes but will not do HD video and thats fine with me for what I am using it for. The video quality is exactly what my tape looks like and I did not notice any degradation of video quality.

It is better than I expected
I bought this to convert my VHS tapes to MP4 so I could actually watch them while traveling and stuck in a motel or tent. We all have a box of old VHS movies that never made it to DVD or a box of home movies we made when the kids were young. This is a handy small unit that converts these so I can upload the final product to a storage unit like The Cloud or Dropbox and share them with friends or family. But mostly so I can upload them onto my I-pad to watch when camping. And it seems to bypass the anti-copy feature on many VHS and DVDs. And the unit does the job very well. Even without instructions, the thing is easily intuitive and if you have an average IQ, using it will be no problem. I use a flash-drive but it can also record on a micro-SD card. I use a splitter form my VHS to the TV and the recorder so I can watch while I record and know when to stop the unit. My only two complaints are that the unit does NOT stop recording when the signal ends at the end of the tape and the stop/pause button is a bit tricky. Other than it, I like the machine and will continue to convert my favorite DVD to MP4 so I will have a selection to watch while traveling.

Standalone unit works great!!!!
I used to use the adapters with my PC and I would use programs like Roxio or Honestech but after days of aggravation, I couldn't get any adapter and program to work on my laptop. So I tried this standalone converter and it worked perfect from the start. Very easy to use. Haven't had any issues in the month I've been using it.

Convient to use but makes absolutely awful videos
This is for the "VC500ST One Touch Standalone Digital Converter" If the only thing you care about is how easy it is to capture video from a VCR and you don't care about picture quality in the least.... then this product may be for you. There is barely any configurable options to speak of. You plug in the cable, play your content, hit record...and BLAM. You have a video on a memory stick. No software to load or compatibility issues. If you even remotely care about the resulting video quality made by this device then stay far far away. First thing's first, it encodes the video to 60fps progressive and it does so by using inferior deinterlacing methods. The resulting video is jerky with weird flashing frames when scenes change. It is just a mess. Those lack of configurable options I mentioned above means that you can't tell it to encode in native interlaced (as in how the device is receiving this input from a vcr or dvd player) and then take the video into handbrake/avisynth or whatever it is you use on your pc and perform better deinterlacing there. It is already horribly deinterlaced and made progressive. It is stuck that way forever. Deal with it. There is awful color banding and posterization. Blue skies do not blend from one shade of blue to the next, there are distinct lines separating each shade. Hard to tell if this is due to a hardware limitation or just the awful software settings used to encode the file that you still can't adjust. Oh, and it saves it as 3:2 aspect ratio for some reason. There are likely other issues with this device if I spent more time looking into it. But I almost immediately boxed it back up and began the return. It is almost like some intern was selected to dial in the encoding settings for this device and had no idea what they were doing and made multiple bad decisions. Stay away if you care even a little about the quality of your video. Literally just about any USB stick you can buy to capture on your PC will have more options and in turn better resulting video quality.

Works as advertised and expected
I bouth this product to digitize some video tapes I had. There are others I tried with some expected failures or less than favorable results. This worked as adverised and impressed me with it's results. As a stand alone device it works as I wanted it to. Just keep in mind that the video quality relies on the source and the condition of the media within the source of the video. I'm using a standard VHS VCR (nothing special) for a source. The 'digital converter' created very good video files which I'm very happy with. I've tried two other devices which failed to do what they advertised. There other products which look silimilar to this one, they may be rebranded, but this is the one I chose and it works great as long as you follow the directions and have realisitic expectations.
