As one year ends, and our old world fades into memory, a new future is born. On a frozen archipelago, where it is too cold to farm, a few thousand survivors from across the Atlantic have found a refuge. The arduous process of turning a sanctuary into a home begins once more for these weary travellers who’ve been chased from Britain, from Ireland, from France and Denmark. But their work is not yet done. The missing Marines cannot be left behind. The French and Ukrainians cannot be abandoned. The cartel can never be forgotten. As soldiers once again become civilians, the dangers of malnutrition replace the everyday spectre of starvation. Potential mutiny supersedes being overrun by the undead. Boredom replaces fear. Slowly, they relax, allowing themselves to enjoy the simple pleasure of music and plays, of weddings and births, of life without the imminent prospect of death. But all is not what it seems in the snowy wastes surrounding their town. While Europe is a zombie-filled radioactive wasteland, there are other continents. Other oceans. Other survivors. Other communities, just like their own, who will fight to keep what they’ve the clawed from the grip of the apocalyptic nightmare. Set in Northern Europe, Eastern Canada, and the tumultuous seas between, as one year ends, and a new civilisation dawns. Review: still good many twists and turns - Not sure what to say except so far I wish this was a movie lol . I would definitely watch it. I’m not huge into zombie books but this series definitely has kept me entertained. Review: Love this series! - I am addicted to this series and I buy the new edition as soon as I get a notification that a new book was released. I love the scenarios and the character progression and as always, I can’t wait for the next one.

On Frank Tayell's Surviving the Evacuation, Book 17: There We Stood
If you haven't read the preceding books in this series, you will be kind of lost in this book. If you have read them, this volume may be a bit lower in action and fun. I liked it because it continues the tales of some zompoc characters I really have grown to like. The survivors have met generous friends in Nova Scotia and have found some safety in Newfoundland. Bill, Thaddeus, Chester, Nilda, Tuck, and the others are very much looking for the new home they and their followers can need to live. They have the components needed and are developing a lot of new skills and on the road to develop a currency. I do strongly recommend this book for those other Tayell fans who have been following his stories of the zombie apocalypse and the world afterwards, complete with all sorts of threats to their lives, both zombies and evil humans.

Review
Having invested in this series, I had to continue to the end. The editing of this series leaves much to be desired but was able to get the context of the writing. I realized there was a difference in spelling but grammar is grammar. I would like to see how people fare a decade or many decades from the events. Maybe something later?

Not as exciting as before
First, I am not recommending you skip this book. It clearly is a bridge to the next story, be it forward or backwards in time. But that said, it plods along. Normally I finish these in one or two sittings, but I kept putting this away and forgetting to come back. Still, it is connecting some dots that I hope will lead to several new exciting books in the series.

Love it
I love these books they are well written and get you in wanting to know more about what happens to this person or that person. They become a part of your life, hoping as they hope that they find what they are looking for. That they survive what has been thrown in there way.

Frank is back on form
I have followed this series from the beginning. The first few books were great - gripping imaginative writing. Several books in, the plots became ever more convoluted and less plausible. The high point of this period were the plodding tales from Anglesey and which seemed to never end and become evermore fanciful and bogged down with endless wooden legions of baddies. They required pages of background at the start of each book and contained too many characters who weren't fully drawn and who you did not care enough about. They were still readable but I yearned the for writing of the early books. I am pleased to say this latest instalment is excellent. Why? Because it's inventive, places the characters in new fresh surroundings, its narrative feels less claustrophobic and there is something intriguing and original in the plot. A return to form. Thank you Frank

Super fan
Another amazing book in my favorite series. It was nice to reconnect and check in with old favorites and have some new characters to get to know a bit. It has pushed the group in a new direction we have not seen for a couple books now. Really wnjoyed every minute reading it.

Absolutely great characters and story lines.
What a great series. At first I thought zombies...no way , but the characters are so good that they are the story and zombies become insignificant. Couldn't put the series down until I had finished them all.

Great series of books
Surviving the Evacuation Ok, right up front this isn’t a single book review I’m reviewing the whole saga that is ‘Surviving the Evacuation’. I’m retired with plenty of time on my hands and like to read books that form a series rather than just individual stories. I admit that having finished reading the 20 books, so far, in the series I went back to book 1 and started reading the series for a second time enjoying it just as much as I did the first time. First off, this is one of the best series of books I have read and I read a lot in the post-apocalyptic genre. Normally I would avoid books about zombies but this series isn’t really about zombies although they are the focus of the problems the characters have in their survival. It’s about surviving in a post-apocalyptic world and all the problems that that entails. What is refreshing in this series is that women play a major role in the leadership, decision making and the fighting. I’m desperately trying not to put any spoiler’s in this review so it won’t be an in-depth review of the individual stories. Basically the story starts in England and then travels across continents. What I like is that the author will track what happens to individuals as they venture into the wastelands but he also keeps track of what is happening back at where the main body of the survivors are currently based. There’s plenty of action fighting the zombies, corrupt government officials, a criminal cartel and survival itself. One thing, you have to leave reality behind you are stepping off the reality bus when you read a book about zombies. Yes, you can look at what the characters in the book do and say to yourself they wouldn’t do that or they should’ve done this or this just wouldn’t happen. This isn’t a ‘Surviving the Apocalypse book for Dummies’ so don’t expect the characters to act or do things that people would do in the real world. This series of books are simply a good read and I’m looking forward to reading the continuation of the stories that the author has started in the books. There is still a long way for the survivors to go and I hope the author is up to the journey.
