Narex Richter Bevel Edge Chisel 1/2" (13mm)

Well made and took very little to lap and home to a razor edge. Like a Marples chisel from the 80s.

The first chisel was lost in transit with DHL. It was put into an envelope following Amazon's new less packaging envelope system. The seal on the side of the envelope failed, the chisel must have fallen out in transit and DHL delivered the envelope empty. The second chisel came in a proper cardboard box. The chisel had a coating of light oil and I took this off with thinners. To my surprise that also removed all the Narex writing on the blade. I lapped the bottom of the blade and that was a good surprise. Tempering will distort the steel and if the manufacturer grinds the steel after tempering instead of grinding before (the latter is easier and cheaper) the manufacturer can choose the dished side for the bottom, and so it proved. The bottom lapped with a hollow in the centre similar to a Japanese chisel. The chisel took the edge easily and it did a nice job paring off some screw hole plugs. All in all I am happy with my purchase.

The chisel is a good solid tool. Good value for the money I think. 👍

It took me almost an hour and a half to attempt to flatten the back, both the full length, and when it was obvious it would take hours on 240 grit, only the first inch. I still did not make it all the way as I don't have more time to waste on this chisel.The steel is great, the quality control is very poor. I would recommend if you want to rectify the whole thing on a belt sander after paying a few tens of euros for it. Mouth ground slightly crooked. One star for the disappointment, 2 stars because it is still excellent handle, design and steel.

Can't complain for the price, it is a great chisel with what I would consider very quality steel. Takes an edge easily. The wood handle is downright luxurious. Worth every penny. If you care about performance as much as I do, have a sharpening system ready and be prepared to spend 20-30 minutes getting it flat on the back side and sharp. It **seems** ready to go out of the box, and may be fine for some projects, but after closer examination it is clear this thing needs some TLC. Start by flattening the back side with your coarsest possible option. Once I got it working to my standards, I must say this is hard to beat.
