Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran & Oscar and the Lady in Pink

Very Mixed.
The first of two storyies in this book is a very good tale of a French school boy abandoned by his mother and father and adopted by a Turkish store clerk who happens to be Sufi. This story was made into a good movie. BUT... the second story is a horrible hospital tale about a child dying. Very icky. I have no idea why these two stories are in one book together. Bad Idea.

Short, easy but deeply moving read
I first read "Oscar and the lady in pink" in original, French version. It's a book that can be read within 1 or 2 hours. It's very short but so moving that it'll stay with you for ever. I loved it so much that I wanted to read more by this author and that's why I bought "Monsieur Ibrahim", which once again moved me profoundly. I bought the English version as a gift for a friend of mine.

Easy read
Easy read, simple plot. More like a rough draft then a full developed story.May be interesting to ask a group of people to develop that theme and give the story a different ending.

Just like the film
Just like the film. Trully moving, philosophical. Religion is very important for the main character; there is a bridge between Jews and Moslems.IRMA DICKINSON

Both stories are awesome! A good read for seekers
If you are familiar with sufic lore or a Sufi practitioner, you will love this book (as well as the movie, I recommend it). Anyone who would want to read something different, and uplifting, more sophisticated than run of the mill feel good literature. It's a good read and interesting for seekers of any denomination

charming
this is one of my favorite writers. The stories were so compelling and charming that I read them again! I really enjoy Schmittt's short stories.

Great read
I really enjoyed both books. Both are about the relationship between a child and an adult that is not their parent. In both cases the adult is more caring and has a closer connection to the child than their parents. In both books the parents are unable to relate to their child for different reasons. The flowers of the Koran was chosen for my book club and we all agreed it's well written and has an interesting story line which centres around the unlikely relationship of the boy and a local shopkeeper.
