More like this - and a bit further along in the miracle
When I was a girl, there was almost no such thing as grief recovery! Once you lost someone close to you, you were" benched forever and that's that!"Today's is quite a different story, except sometimes in my church, which can be backward about some issues sometimes. Jack grew up in that climate and one did not talk about normal personhood needs. Catholics walk on water - or else.In the first place, when their son fell ill and died, their community and their church and their doctors failed them - because - they were not steered and engageed into today's menu for super grief recovery !So, once more we watch the grieved flaling and failing - and in this case finding the path to the way back only by God's grace. The tragedy is not that bad things happen - bad things happen. But the the tragedy is that we need the support of others when the tragedy blinds us to the path.SOMEONE in the mob of folks in their lives needed to get those people to effective help. But no one did. There truly ARE tons of ways to win the grief recovery - everywhere for people today.Jack was guaranteed to crash and burn when the same thing happened to his nephew one year later. NO way out! The famous "one/two punch" from life is cruel and challenging. Partly because he won over the first loss and there is that feeling that "Wow nothing bad will ever happen again" and it's a nice thought but not true. When we come up from grief, it's like being post-op - we are truly a bit flimsy and squidgy from it and need to do healthy restorations - whatever that means in our unique life path. His time as a coach was still a powerful thing - it gave him the memory of a path that he could navigate in the past and WIN with. And so the coaching lets him deal with the crash and burn and rescue himself - and the wholesome physicality surely strengthened him a bit so that when the second. tragedy arrived, he could co-operate with a winning path - The Way Back - at least now it exists!Be a grief recovery activist - one hour online over it may impress you - and empower you to help your fellow man in his dark moment of loss and you yourself will know that faith hope love and healing ARE!God bless all those connected with this film.

Inspiring
I doubt that a high school coach could ever get away with all of the profanity! But the drinking...it's just too bad that so many lives are ruined by alcoholism-and it's not just the drinker's life. Protagonist got off easy- he could have killed someone, driving drunk like that. The production was very much on the discreet side of things, but it looked like Ben's character was in rehab. Good for him. (good for us too).Nice movie- I enjoyed it, and I'll tell my friends to watch it.Thanks Ben, good job!

Best Affleck performance in a long while, thoughtful film.
Ben Affleck is a very smart guy, he can write and produce. He is a fine actor but not exactly what he or others expected. If you look at Cruise, Damon, Pitt, Cooper etc. they're likable, sympathetic because they're vulnerable and the inner emotive person bleeds through into their performances. Affleck is likable because of what his characters think in roles that are sort of morality plays. But now, there is something new. In "The Way Back" Ben brings with him a solitude around his person. He has become a great bear of a man, outwardly stolid but clearly much more. He brings the screen presence of Nolte, Lonsdale or Von Sydow. He is not the sympathetic everyman but a sort of mythic archetype. I'd love to see him bring this screen presence to a portrayal of Hemingway or the kind of films Brando did in his later career.

Good. Unexpected good!
Ben Affleck was really good in this movie. The story line is strong and the actors really were convincing. It's a good movie but will make you tear up so keep those Kleenex close by.

You will watch it through its good cinematically. Coach is big mad and reflects every father in America. also not believable bc coaches do not talk that way in high school, refs and parents would riot. heart emoji

The Finest Performance Of Ben Affleck's Career In A Very Solid Film
I would give The Way Back 4 and a half stars if the option was available. There is no doubt that this is a formulaic film that tells a familiar story. But I have always maintained that treading on common ground is not a problem if the writing, acting, and directing are done well. And in TWB, all three are done very well. First, this is the type of film that Gavin O'Connor excels at making. I think Warrior was one of the best films of 2011, and I would rate it just above TWB. Which means I think that TWB is still a very fine film. The acting is exceptional, especially from Ben Affleck. I believe that this is the best performance of his career, and I know that personal experience in trial and tribulation helped foster that performance. I think Affleck has always been a good actor, but his strengths remain in the things he does behind the camera (i.e. his writing, and directing). But with this film, he has excelled. I don't know if he overacheived here, and to be honest, I don't really care. I would have no issues whatsoever if he is remembered come Oscar season with his first ever nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Finally I think the writing was pretty solid. Again, this is not a story that is unique. The basic plot structure for TWB has been the framing for countless movies. However, when a film maker is going to tell an old, old story, then the dialogue and the characters have to be strong. And they are here. I thoroughly enjoyed TWB, and I do believe that this is a film that can touch your heart. You just have to let yourself like it.
