Would this work for a window air-conditioner? 
Thanks for all the great, albeit contradictory (hehe) answers. Bought it, figuring I can use it for my vacuum cleaner and car's cabin air filter as well. Based on all the answers, I'm thinking it can work with the AC unit as a pre-filter before a regular AC foam filter.

This is more of a question than an answer but I think that you wouldn't want to use this as a pre-filter along with regular AC foam filter because that would be too restrictive.  I am wondering if this carbon filter by itself would be too restrictive for an AC, blocking the intake of sufficient air.  Did you try it, and if so how did it work out?  The only carbon window AC filter I've found is made by Nordic Pure (15x24 cut to fit), and it's pricey at about $84 for 6 filters.  It's a carbon layer bonded to a white polyester layer.

For a whole-house air conditioner system w/ a 3M a.c. filter, do I just place a cut piece of this over the air intake to increase cleanliness of air?

Yes, exactly right. Cut the carbon filter to match your 3M filter & place on top.  That's what I did. It serves as a pre-filter & odor control filter. It also makes the primary 3M filter last longer. Hope that helps.
