Good Cooking Thermometer thats slower and Harder to Read than more expensive Instant read Units
The price is great for this product but I was disappointed that the readout which is very small and seems slower than several other instant read thermometers that we own. The buttons are quite small so it's more challenging to use than the CDN unit.which costs more. If you have good eyesight, you may not mind the small readout but if you are older and need glasses to read stuff, this unit could be a challenge. My main complaint besides the small readout is the much slower response times.than competing units. We have a taylor model (weekend Warrior) that has a simlar readout similar to our favorite model, the CDN. Each are accurate and fast. . Our favorite is the CDN Instant Read that is instant read, accurate, and easy to read. That model broke about 5 years after purchase. CDN replaced the broken unit with a new unit. In testing the Ideal unit, it seemed to match in accuracy. All three matched with 1 degree with ice readings and boiling water. and everything in between. If the Smarthomes is priced at what you want to spend, it is OK and much better than some of the very slow older type of thermometers. Just don't expect the speed or easy readout of the more expensive units..

Like everyone else pointed out
The overall device was okay. Like everyone else pointed out, the buffering time did take about 15-30 seconds before it is able to properly display the appropriate temperature reading. However, the readings are quite accurate, and for its price, I believe it is quite a nice purchase. I definitely recommend this particular product, and I will probably buy it again if I need a replacement sometime in the future.

Does the job and does it well
I usually guess when my meat is done, and I'm almost always right, but I was hosting my first Christmas dinner this year and planned to make a roast beef and didn't want to leave it to chance, so I bought this. It worked! I do wish it was more of an instant-read, but I was aware when I ordered it that it wasn't, so I'm not going to take off a star for that. Inexpensive and it does the job much better than my old one, which wasn't digital (I'd have to wait for the needle to slide around and come to rest in the section marked "beef", "pork", "poultry", etc.) and was always off by about 35 degrees, which led me to serving raw meat more times than I care to think about. I'm totally happy with this thermometer.

Great.
This product works great both for the oven and for the grill. It's easy to read and works pretty fast. The temperature can be taken in Celsius or Fahrenheit with a push of a button. The long reach means that it works great for the BBQ. I like everything about it and definitely recommend it. The same type was $30 on another site and I'm so glad I found this one on Amazon. It was reasonably priced and the quality is great. I gave two as gifts to my sons, who now have BBQs of their own. A great deal for a great product. Well done, lol!

Slow response, right handed
I ordered this thermometer (Smart Homes Digital Meat Thermometer) to replace my old Hamilton Beach digital thermometer that had fallen into the dish water. While waiting for delivery, I dried out my original to see if it would work after being submerged in hot soapy water.Amazon delivered the replacement in their normal fast way.Out of curiosity, I decided to test the new thermometer (Smart Homes Digital Meat Thermometer) by placing the tip into boiling water to see how accurate it was and how long it would take to reach 212 degrees Fahrenheit.I also decided to test my original thermometer at the same time.Water boils at 212 degrees F at sea level according to my high school science classes but boiling temperature will vary according to altitude. For higher altitudes water will boil at a temperature lower than 212 degrees and at lower altitudes (Death Valley) water will boil at higher temperatures.Since I live at about 1,000 ft above sea level according to Google Earth, water should boil at around 210 degrees - per information from about.com.I brought a pot of tap water to a rolling boil and set the stop watch app on my iPhone to zero. I inserted the tip of the Smart Homes Digital Meat Thermometer to about an inch of depth into the boiling water and started the timer.Starting from 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the Smart Homes thermometer that I bought from Amazon took 44.5 seconds to reach 211.8 degrees. I left the thermometer in the boiling water to see its maximum reading for boiling water on my stove. The max was 215.4 F. I noticed that the readings would “stall” at various levels and then jump up again during my test. If a user did not know this he/she might believe their food temperature was lower than it actually was. Having not allowed enough time for the thermometer to read actual temperature one’s food might turn out over cooked. My old Hamilton Beach thermometer (similar in appearance to ThermoPro TP-01 Instant-Read Digital Cooking Thermometer - Amazon) took 7.8 seconds to reach its max of 213 degrees.I did the test three more times with similar results. My results appeared to vary slightly according to how deep in the boiling water I held the thermometer.I did not see any way to calibrate either my old thermometer or the newly purchased Smart Homes thermometer other than to take note of their reading errors in boiling water and adjust my cooking temperature accordingly.Out of curiosity and knowing that items such as the Smart Homes thermometer are available wholesale through various websites, I checked alibaba.com to see the current wholesale price of the thermometer.According to alibaba.com the per unit price of a thermometer similar to the Smart Homes thermometer that I bought from an Amazon vendor is 10 to 20 cents per unit (if I am reading it correctly) with a minimum purchase of 200 thermometers. Other similar thermometers ranged in price from $1 up to $4 per unit. Wholesale price variance may have been according to vendor and minimum number of units purchased. The pictures, packaging and specifications for each thermometer I checked was the same with only variations on the logo printed on the thermometer and the color. If I had opted to sign in to alibaba.com as a member, I could have obtained the current price as of the date that I signed in.Note that this is a right handed thermometer. If you are left handed then you will need to be able to read the temperatures and manipulate the buttons upside down or you will need to use your right hand when using the thermometer.Bottom line: My test was not strict in any sort of scientific manner and maybe I received a defective unit. However, it did take a considerable amount of time for the Smart Homes thermometer to reach boiling temperature vs. my old Hamilton beach thermometer.I am not going to use the thermometer for anything other than cooking a roast or a meatloaf so the error in temperature reading is not of any great consequence – I’ll simply adjust temperature according to the error in readings with boiling water. However, the time it takes for the Smart homes thermometer to respond to temperature is a problem. The fact that it is right handed makes it a bit less desirable for me.For my purposes, I can give only give it one star and will return it for a refund.

Not exactly as advertized
I wasn't thrilled with this thermometer, just because it gave the impression it was an instant read. But it was not. When I put it in my hot product to test it's heat, it started somewhere in the 70s and kept climbing about .5-1 degree at a time, all the way up to 120 or so, which is when I stopped watching it. If you are going to be placing it in a cooler starting product and watching the temp rise gradually as the product warms, then it works fine. They did give me a refund though, no hassles.

It's Just Okay
This is my first meat thermometer and I gotta say, it takes a long time for it to register a temperature. It's definitely not "instant" as it claims in the name. I stopped it after about 20 seconds but it was still going at that time. From what other reviewers have stated, it takes up to 30 seconds to get a temperature which is not instant in my opinion. At least it's better than trying to guess the temp by touching it with my fingers, that's why I will continue to use this until I can afford a better brand.
