WHAT IS MASS LOADED VINYL (MLV)? Mass Loaded VInyls are heavy materials that are engineered to block airborne noise transfer through walls. They are designed to face the studs of a wall. Our MLV is engineered to be heavy, soft, and limp – three key characteristics that take advantage of “mass law” and the physics of damping. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER MLV FOR MY NEW HOME? Walls in most new single-family homes have low acoustic performance (low STC), which is why you can hear the TV in the other room or the toilet flush. Adding extra insulation doesn’t significantly improve the acoustic performance of the wall. STC is a measurement used to determine the relative acoustic performance of a wall. The higher the number, the better the performance. A wall with an STC 28 roughly blocks 28 dB of noise. A wall with an STC 42 blocks about 42 dB of noise. WHAT IS THE PERFORMANCE OF A TYPICAL WALL? Without insulation - STC 28; With insulation - STC 32; With insulation & additional drywall - STC 39; With insulation & our MLV - STC 42. WILL I REALLY NOTICE A DIFFERENCE? Studies have reported that a 4 dB reduction in sound level is noticeable. A 10 dB reduction in sound level seems half as loud. With our sound control membranes installed, you will barely be able to hear the TV or conversation in the next room.
