A Treasury of Rumi: Guidance on the Path of Wisdom and Unity (Treasury in Islamic Thought and Civilization, 5)

This is an amazing translation of selected Rumi works. He has unfortunately been misrepresented in English translation in the past, with his mentions of God, Islam, and the afterlife often obscured or entirely left out in an effort to create a new age “spiritual but not religious” Rumi that doesn’t have anything to do with the historical figure. The introduction to this text points out these problems and their implications.As for the text itself, subjects range from the reason for man’s existence to the ultimate and only true existent - God. Many of the sections have the original Persian text preceding the English translation, but a few do not. In both cases, citations letting the reader know where one can find the original follow the translation.Far be it for anyone to review the works of Rumi himself, one of the great giants of Islamic spirituality. This translation and introduction to his life and afterlife in the Western mind, however, is a very valuable addition to any bookshelf and is to be highly recommended.

This book is a little masterpiece and rivals Chittick's book "Sufi Path of Love" (also an excellent book) in excellence. I say buy that book as soon as you can because these publications are hard to get if you wait.

One of the best translations I've ever read. A lot of explanations by the author explaining use of words, historical events that influenced poetry, and religious symbolism. A must for any true Rumi fan.

My favorite thing about this book, apart from the content, is the binding. Solid. The groove on the edge prevents wrinkles.

I haven't finished the book yet, but it seems to be a really wonderful piece about Rumi's life and all his thoughts and sayings! Not to mention how pretty it is..

A beautiful little selection of Rumi, from a traditional Muslim perspective. Many parts of the book are clearly aimed at a contemporary British Muslim audience.

Phenomenal book. Seen in light of who he was as an Islamic scholar and not a "romantic poet". A MUST MUST MUST read.

This isn't just a translation of Rumi, the author draws upon the Sufi poet's works to produce something of resonance to people today. Really enjoyable, thought-provoking read. Provides priceless reminders and simple yet profound pieces of wisdom on how we, as Muslims, should live.
