One of the best books on the subject of polygamy.
Since I have always lived near polygamists, I find the subject fascinating and have read over a dozen books on polygamy. This book makes my "A" list. The way this book differs from most written on this subject is that he doesn't focus on the sexual side of polygamy. Instead, you are shown what a well crafted business operation they run. From welfare fraud to off shore accounts sheltering their money, the plygs seem to have figured out just how to scam the system, or in their terms, bleed the beast. Mr. Kociela spent 16 years in the area working as an editor for a local paper, and as a result he is very knowledgeable about the subject. His intelligence as well as his writing skills are very evident in this books. Highly recommended book.

More fact than fiction
Sadly this book was more true than false and not just about the FLDS. Serving in the ministry with my husband in t ministry I was once naive men and women of God did not walk their talk to such depravity and blatant disregard to the Scriptures and the Father we serve. But as Paul says so must I that which I would do I do not, that which I would not do I do. As my good friend a psychologist told me what better job could there be for the ultimate narcissist but to be able to say I had this revelation from God. Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing, this wasn't fiction.

sometimes fiction is more exciting than truth
I kept waiting for the disclaimer "that the resemblance among characters and actual persons living or dead is purely coincidental." The comparison of Lavon Hart with Warren Jeffs is really remarkable and certainly not coincidental. I must admit thought that the story line was a lot more exciting than most of the non-fiction accounts of polygamy that I have read. I would recommend this novel for those persons interested in the going-ons in the FLDS church.

Great read
This is a great book. It is very well written, and even though it is fiction, it gives an accurate portrayal of polygamy and its opressive nature. The author uses words to make the reader feel like he or she is right there in the moment, and I promise you will find yourself on a whirlwind of emotions as you make your way through this book. It is well worth the money and the time to read it:)

Very informative and worth reading
I've read a number of books written by former polygamists, about polygamy and I have to say that although this is a fictional account of a true story, it is definitely worth reading. Very informative and really gets inside the world of the fundamentalist polygamous lifestyle. I liked it so much that I am now reading Plygs 2. I also highly recommend the second book as it gives much more information on how the capture of Warren Jeffs went down - from many points of view. if you have an interest in this subject you will learn quite a bit by reading this book.

fact or fiction?
I knew going into this book that it was fiction but I soon forgot this fact. Though I am not a big reader, I found it difficult to put down. It was hard, hearing places mentioned and knowing them to be real places, to not think that the story was real as well.

Well written, but not for me..
Perhaps it's my mistake rather than any fault of the author, but I had anticipated more insight into the lives of polygamous families. Instead there was a much more detailed look at the machinations of the faith. There was a lot of in-depth talk about weapons and politics, which at the risk of sounding sexist, didn't interest my little female brain nearly as much as reading more about the plygs daily life would have. I also struggled a little with the book flitting from factual account to novel-style dialogue. Ed Kociela is definitely a talented writer and this was a well written book, but as I said in the title, it just wasn't for me. Note to self; don't skim read the blurb next time!!
