The first-ever compilation of the Kingston Trio’s work was also one of the better of numerous assemblies of their hits and notable songs that have appeared across the decades. Originally a 12-song LP (but reissued as a ten-song platter in 1980), the content ranges across the group’s history, not in strict chronological order, but encompassing the highlights of both the original trio (Dave Guard/Nick Reynolds/Bob Shane) and the second lineup (with John Stewart replacing Guard). Starting with “Tom Dooley,” the material takes us right up to “Where Have All The Flowers Gone” – which was sort of a reestablishing hit for the group early in 1962 – and even finds room for the group original “Take Her Out of Pity.” What’s here may not be as loud as some of the rock & roll that more people remember from the years 1958-1962, but it tells us just as much about what was on the mind of white, middle-class America in that era. And it’s still great listening and a fine introduction to the group, beautifully understated where it needs to be and boisterous and fun at the right moments.

Fantastic Album
This album is aptly named. It is arguably one of the best albums the Kingston Trio has released.

Where is the stereo Merry Minuet?
The only thing I didn"t like is the track The Merry Minuet which once again used the Hungry I track rather than the Stereo Concert version which would have been a 5 Star choice! Get the original vinyl instead of this pale one.

The folk Beatles of their time!
searched long and hard for this title, which I had on vinyl years ago; the Trio were genuine superstars of the folk era, and the blueprint for Peter Paul and Mary;A great selection of songs featuring the original Trio with The late great Dave Guard such as "M.T.A.", "Tom Dooley", and "A Worried Man" and songs with his great replacement (also the late, great) John Stewart such as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" - an epic anti-war song from the early 60's.Buy it and discover how truly great they were in their prime and one of the biggest seelling artists of all time.

Excellent product
I bought this CD for my brother for Christmas. I have the album and had waited for the CD version to be released for quite some time. Although there are a lot of "greatest hits" cd's of the Kingston Trio out there they are all lacking in that they leave off one song or another. This cd while not comprehensive includes all of their most popular hits.It arrived in great shape and on time. It was also reasonably priced.

Vinyl review
Clear sound. Very smooth buttery 180 gram record. With a fair collection of their greatest hits. Record is a limited number pressing. Impressive on low grade record players and better ones too!

Extremely disappointing live recording of their best songs. The songs might be good
Extremely disappointing live recording of their best songs. The songs might be good, but the performance isn't; a lot of sillyness on stage which is not funn. This is going straight to the charity shop and I will look for an alternative compilation.Where does it say this is live? It doesn't and it should.

old but great
I had the LP of this cd years ago and it somehow got lost in all the many moves we have had in the years since this.It was listening to old, treasured uncle. "Where have all the Flowers Gone?" is, to my mind the best version of the song.Rave from the grave - great!!

or your favourite take on a particular number
What is 'The Best' is a personal matter. You may think the choices on this CD are not your favourites, or your favourite take on a particular number. But don't let that put you off. This CD features the Trio in their best form with their typical magical harmonys and musicality. All of which is given extra atmosphere by the updated transcription. Worth every penny. Don't hesitate!
