StarTech SATA to USB Adapter, USB 10Gbps, 2.5in SATA III (USB312SAT3CB)

I tried a number of USB to SATA III enclosures and cables for booting a Pi 4, this was the one that works reliably and fully. It's hard to guarantee what chipset is in this, but I have to assume it's asmedia asm1153e because of how well it functions. Jmicron based adapters did not perform well. Note that if you're using this on a pi4, you need this USB 3.1 version. The less expensive USB 3.0 version looks identical, but did not boot. Note to the manufacturer: This chipset matters. For some customers, this is important information that should be shared in the specs. if this is ASM1153e chip, then PUT IT IN THE DESCRIPTION.

This is a review on the USB 3.1 (10Gbps) adapter cable, not type C. For those claiming that they're not seeing improvement from USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 gen 1, that is completely false. ***TLDR; yes it is USB 3.1 (10Gbps) Gen 2 compatible.** For those who want a more thorough review. Here it is. So a little bit of a lesson before I begin. 1) The weird nomenclature of USB 3.0 and beyond: -When USB 3.0 was announced it claimed 5Gbps transfer speeds (theoretical). When USB 3.1 was announced they decided to change the nomenclature of 3.0 to 3.1 Gen 1, and the newer iteration was named USB 3.1 gen 2. Yeah, they just love to confuse the consumers. 2) You need a device that will push its capabilities: -So to truly test if this cable works you need a device that will saturate its bandwidth past USB 3.0 gen 1. Again, 5Gbps is theoretical speeds. With my previous USB 3.0 UASP enabled enclosure, my 256GB Seagate SSD was able to reach write/read speeds of 382.4/390.9. I knew this drive was cable of much more. 3) The computer/laptop/tablet must have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 capable port: -Please check that your device, not your external drive connected to the SATA connector is USB 3.1 Gen 2 compatible. Just because it has a special color like blue, green, red, etc. doesn't necessarily mean it's USB 3.1 Gen 2 port. - For my desktop build, I have to install a pci-e card to the motherboard. Usually they will have no more than 1 or 2 ports per card. If you see card with 3, 4, 5, etc. ports, it's likely it is a USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 port So here are the results compared with a USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 w/ UASP enable to the StarTech USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable: -USB 3.0: write/read=382.4/390.9 -USB 3.1 Gen 2: write/read=450.9/494.5 I was hesitant to buy this cable due to some negative reviews, but I can tell you with the proper pre-requisites, this cable delivers on what it claims.

I sometimes need to transfer data from laptop drives that are screwed into a metal caddy. Adapters with wider SATA connector blocks require the drive to be removed from the caddy first. Not a big deal, but this is more convenient. The cable is 16" long, which is a good length, allowing versatile positioning of the drive and easy coiling to fit into my toolbox. The adapter works great and seems well built. Unlike other adapters, this one shows up in Windows' "safe ejection" dialog as the model of the hard drive itself, rather than the model of the adapter's chipset, which is helpful. The only thing it lacks that would be good to have is an activity indicator LED so I know whether the drive is active or idle.

Well it works and yes it is Sata 3.1 but there are a few things that I did not like. First of all it tends to get very warm when it is being used. Second there is no LED to indicate that the drive is being accessed. There is a RED LED on the bottom that appears to indicate power. Lastly while the 20 inch cable may be adequate for use with a laptop it is a royal pain for a desktop with the USB3 connectors in the rear. If they had a 1 meter cable then this would be more suitable ... even better if it were a thin, flexible, braided cable. Update: Bus 004 Device 002: ID 174c:55aa ASMedia Technology Inc. The computer is an HP 8300 SFF (I7 CPU) and I using MB USB3 ports. The operating System is Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit with Linux 4.15.0-33 x86_64 kernel. I used Silicon Power 64 Gbyte S60 SSD for testing. I'll give StarTech 5 stars - even though this cable should have worked for me and didn't. My only goal in writing this review is to help someone who might be in exactly my circumstances so they don't waste any time trying to troubleshoot the same issue that struck me. And to pay a compliment to StarTech. I have an old Mac Pro tower circa 2008 and a new MacBook Pro. I was trying to get some data off an old 2.5" SATA drive that had lived in my tower and was now sitting on a shelf. The StarTech USB-to-SATA cable would not power up my old drive. My old 2.5" SATA drive is a WD Velociraptor. They were wicked fast in their day. And also consumed more juice than their peers (my Velociraptor drive is a WD1500BLFS 150GB drive - it is spec'd at 0.95A@5VDC + 0.3A@12VDC - that's a LOT of juice - almost 10W!). I wasn't sure if this StarTech cable could handle it. My Apple says that it will only handle half of that, but I have a hub that will do a lot more. The setup just didn't work. So I bought a new Samsung SSD here from Amazon, plugged the old 2.5" drive into my Mac Pro tower and copied the data using to my SSD using the StarTech cable in a, pardon the pun, flash. So, you ask, why the 5 stars for StarTech for something that didn't work for me? Simple. Two reasons. First, they took the time to put a tiny LED on their cable. Thanks, StarTech! When I plugged the StarTech into my Mac and it wouldn't power up my 2.5" drive, I at least knew (from the LED) that I had a good connection - the problem was likely on my end. I had a second reason for the 5 star review. When I went to sort out the volts and amps and USB thing I found StarTech's website to be complete and easy to navigate. I typed in the part number for this cable and was brought to a page that had full and easy to read tech specs. Apple's tech specs were equally good as were WD's. Wow! StarTech's as thorough as Apple. Who knew? What could have been a 2 hour exercise in frustration was reduced to 15 minutes of trying, failing, reading the tech specs, solving the problem a different way and getting on with my life. Too bad other vendors aren't as thoughtful. Again, thanks StarTech!

I used 2 of this cable - one for my PS4 Pro and one for my Xbox One X. Came in handy multiple ways, including interfacing drives with my PC, and connecting those same drives to my consoles. Worth getting this if you have a need, especially for connecting an external drive to consoles.

Access and file transfer speed worked far better than anything else I'd used in a long time. Of course, I had to change file permissions on most everything to get to the files, but once that was done one folder and occasionally one file at a time, documents, email files, and image files moved over via cut & paste through windows explorer windows without too much fuss. This came with no software and needs no driver software on Win 10. I was moving files off windows XP and windows 8.1 laptop hard drives onto a windows 10 laptop. This has no novice user interface - if you don't know what you're doing, this may not be a product for you. You have to have a good understanding of windows file structures and windows file permissions and security settings for this to work for you - but if you know that, this is a solid laptop hard drive to USB adapter. This assumes the SATA laptop hard drive you are linking to is in working order with an intact file system.

Whenever i plugged it into the drive that i was using, it worked fine. However, it wasn't reading it. But, i'm pretty sure that there was an issue with the Drive not the Adapter. Overall, it was a nice cable to use and i'll use it another time.

I decided to buy this adaptor cable so that I could boot my Raspberry Pi 4b from an old Intel SSD drive. So far the cable is working great! It’s a huge performance improvement over the SD card I was using to boot my RPi 4b. I’ll be buying more of these adaptors to use with my other RPi’s. I highly recommend this adaptor!
