The beauty of our planets, their moons and our sun unfolds in these models of our solar system built to scale. They accurately reflect the true relationship of the sun, planets and moons to each other. A reversible scale/distance chart in English and metric is included for the proper spacing of the planets and moons, because even at these scales the distances are still vast. The planets and major moons are mounted on beautifully crafted pine bases, finished in an equisite starry night effect. The model's sun has a 26.5" diameter. The moons and small planets are made of steel. The mid-size planets are wood, and the large planets are made of high density, expandable polystyrene (plastic).

Disappointing
My 9 year-old son asked his granddad for a solar system that showed dwarf planets for Christmas and he seriously wanted to find the perfect set. This is not quite it. The base in the images looks wooden, in fact the description says they are.... But they are actually just plastic and the labels are just embossed not printed. Many of the pieces, including a glass frame and some of the galaxies were broken when my dad received it-- making a terrible presentation for a gift. I was glad that the sun was not a decal- it is 2 dimensional but plaster and mounted on a wood frame that has a picture hanging hook so it has some depth. The planets themselves, in particular the larger ones are decent- acrylic but nicely painted. because it is intended to be to scale, the mid and smaller planets are tiny, the size of a pea and even smaller. My son seemed to like this but it's definitely not worth 100 bux- my dad ended up buying a completely different set because he was so disappointed.
