How many inches deep is the top of the clamp ... I have conduit running along the center of my I-beam and don't want to move it.

The horizontal depth of the top clamp is approximately 1.25".

how much headroom is required

Thank you for your question. That's a tough on because it a little about personal preference. It also sometimes matters if you have drywall or open joist. Do you make i-beam pull up bars with both the wide and narrow grips on the same side of the beam?

Can you hang a heavy bag from this mount?

This mount is made for pull ups and hanging knee raises to strengthen your abs. A heavy bag really needs a swivel mount to allow for mobility of the bag. I would suggest researching the proper hardware to hang a heavy bang from an I beam. The Firstlaw pull up bar is not designed to hang a heavy bag. Hope this helps.
