A Good Fourth Entry To The Eva Anima Trilogy
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Anima Vol. 4 by Ikuto Yamashita is Young Adult tie-in novel based on the anime franchise “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”Even though this the fourth volume of the trilogy. Incase your unfamiliar the Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA trilogy it’s set in an alternate timeline set apart from anime and it’s various movies. Evangelion ANIMA gives us a rather charming alternate ending to the Evangelion anime.Evangelion: Anima Vol. 4 continues right where the last volume left off. As the mysterious Eva unit known Armaros continues to convert Earth’s moon for the use in new form of Human Instrumentality project. A large chunk of the growing Moon breaks off and heads on a collision towards Earth, Shinji and and Super Eva are lost to a mysterious force when they use a mysterious Angel super weapon to destroy this large chunk of the Moon. Meanwhile, in space on the last chunk of lunar debris becomes the battlefield between Earth’s last Eva units and Armaro’s Angel followers. With this volume we have the continuation of this globetrotting space mecha techno thriller light novel, As Nerv and the EVA pilots race to prevent the second attempt of the Human Instrumentally Project from the mysterious Armaros. As an Evangelion fan, this volume of the Anima trilogy was an absolutely wild ride. There were several times when I felt so hyped up, I actually let out a yell (Though brief, I loved seeing the Eva pilots race to advert apocalyptic disaster. The author does an amazing job describing the environment and the newer Eva units in such great detail, you can picture it in your head perfectly. ANIMA is actually written by the mecha designer of the series, Ikuto Yamashita, and you can definitely tell. In fact, that actually lends itself to the one downside of this book - there is so much action crammed into the forth volume that you lose the charm and human moments that make Evangelion so relatable and beloved by fans.Though lacking the heart and realism of the original anime series, this novel contained larger than life Eva designs and action scenes. I don’t know if I would prefer this AU to the actual End of Evangelion, or even the newer Rebuild movies, but I do think it is a delightful reimagination that makes long-time fans to stop and think, “What-if?”My only gripe with this volume of the Eva Anima trilogy. Towards half the end of the novel a major battle between the Earth’s Eva pilots and Armaros is presented in a black white visual manga style instead the written format the author used up till that point, but besides that volume 4 is still a good read.Overall, Neon Genesis Evangelion Anima Volume 4 is a full-on mecha sequel to Evangelion. Tons of mechas lots of battles and the fate of the world on the line. A fantastic continuation of this series. That showcases the full might of the Nerv and the Evas. A must for any fan of the genre and for Evangelion fans who wanted more Eva action this novel delivers.
