I have mine paired with the 7'6" Rampage conventional and it is great for white sea bass, medium tuna, and yellowtail. For heavy surf fishing (sharks, rays, etc.) The SGT50H pairs very well with many 11-12 ft Heavy conventional rods like the Ugly Stik Bigwater, Okuma Solaris and Longitude, Daiwa Sealine, and - my favorite - the Penn Battalion. **Q: Can it be used for surf or pier fishing** A: Big conventional reels are inherently more difficult to master than smaller versions. If your intent is to do a lot of distance casting in the surf but you don't need the brawn to tackle big sharks or huge gamefish on 50 lb mono or 80 lb spectra, I'd steer you towards the nimble Seagate 30H filled with 40 to 50 lb braid, or a conventional that offers magnetic braking such as the Akios 656, Penn Squall 15, or Abu Blue Yonder. I swapped the red brakes for heavier Daiwa white brakes on my 50 H and found they make the reel very docile on 100 yard casts with 8-and-bait. **Q: does this have free floating spool like the sealine x-sha models?** A: Not sure if the Seagate is a floating spool or through pinion spool shaft. I have both and the Seagate is a significant upgrade from the Sealine x-sha. I have several Sealines, Seagates, Saltists and one Saltiga. The Seagates and Saltists are similar in performance and cast better than my Sealine x-sha. **Q: How many inch can it retrieve per crank?** A: It depends on how much line is on the reel. Of greater concern should be the quality and ratio. I use it for all applications. When Rock bottom fishing I can crank it up fast with ease. Works well for jigging and even casting. I own expansive reels for my main setups. This one is my workhorse, backup. I have 50 Lbs braid and 40 lbs mono that I use for Trolling and within one second turn into bottom setup by adding a pre rigged 2 dropper loop leader and weight to the swivel instead of lure.If I go on a fishing from jet ski or kayak I m not bringing my expensive reels. So I use it for every application. This one is also great for beginner ora loaner to a friend on fishing trip. I m not worried to beat it up. You can see my videos online where I use this Seagate. My old Penns just gave up the ghost after 50 years.I have been using Diawa equipment since before my granddaughter's mother was born. I use my Daiwa 7700 spinning reel bought in 1970. This looks to be as well built as my Model 7700 that I use for inshore and light outshore fishing every season time I go since I bought it. So I got a couple of these after using a friends last outing. We ran into 30 lb yellowtails and with minimum help my Granddaughter used this to land hers.
