Q: Is this a true sticker, where you just place it on the wall, press and pull back the backing....or do you have to use transfer paper?

It comes on a paper then you take it and rub it off onto the wall. It looks really nice and was easy to apply.

Q: Could this be put on painted canvas?

I'm sure it could. I have several different ones on my walls some of which are sheetrock & some paneling that I painted
