so helpful!! had to buy
I originally checked this out from the library and then knew I had to own it so I could mark it up. It is a thoughtful, quite actionable guide to what I realize some people do intuitively - use music to shift mood/energy. While I've "known that in the background", I never really paid attention to why I put the Rolling Stones on when I get home from work, or Bob Marley on Sunday mornings ... this has helped me create playlists that help me stay focused, and most importantly (to me, anyway), help lift my mood and energy when I need it. I love the science parts, very readable - I am certain the authors could've written quite a different book for academics. Instead, they gave us "regular people" an incredible gift. So grateful! Thank you!!

Perfect Guidebook for Music Therapy
This is such a valuable book for me -- I love all kinds of music, but never really appreciated all of its therapeutic and mental health benefits. The right tune is SO important when it comes to relaxation, meditation, and exercise. Having a gameplan for playing and tuning into the right kind of music is very essential to me. I am constantly re-reading certain pages to reinforce the invaluable lessons learned in this book. Highly recommended!

Just What I Needed
This book is priceless. I started making mixed tapes before there were cassette tapes; I made them on my dad's reel-to-reel. I went nuts when cassettes did come out. Then I started burning playlitsts to CDs. Lately, when I'm working, I play a relevant-to-the-subject playlist on my laptop. One book, one playlist. It's worked so far, but now I know to feel the music more carefully (e.g. I couldn't understand why the song Sunshine Superman distracted me when the title of the story was, in fact, Sunshine Superman)..I get it now. I think we all knew that Baroque music synced up nicely with calmer brainwaves and so forth, but I only understood how a handful of songs changed my physiology. Now my playlists will be made with more care and intention. The book, just as a read, is fascinating. There's not a lot of new information, but it's a good, solid, fun read and will enlighten and enthuse even the worst skeptic.By the way, I live at the end of a cul de sac in Southern California where two major highways meet, and even at midnight can hear bass coming from cars. God knows how that noise is affecting the drivers and passengers. If anybody reading this actually knows somebody who blasts out rap and hip hop, I'd honestly like to hear from them.

Good on the psychology, weaker on the music
The authors' credentials in the psychology department are strong, and that is the strongest part of this book. I was sold on the title's premise, that my playlist can change my life, but was looking for additional insights into how, and what kind of music would be good for what kinds of changes. You can read about the book's general categories in the other reviews and get some idea about how this works. I did not learn too much new that did not seem obvious to me before I read the book. What I was looking for, I did not find, and that was more musical selections correlated with behavioral or mood changes. I found the music categories limited. Of all the musical selections, I found only seven classical pieces with mention of a couple of other composers also limited, and most of those were integrated into the text and not part of a suggested list. What about New Wave music? Many people find Enya very soothing. What about spiritual music? Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus 518". Listen to "There is Faint Music" from the album "Never a Brighter Star" to slow your heartbeat and get a dose of spirituality at the same time, a beautiful piece of less well-known music.None of the pieces on my favorite walking music playlist are found in the book. May I recommend the Bee Gees "Staying Alive," Bob Seeger's "Old Time Rock and Roll," and The Commitments "Mustang Sally?" If you want a lift in your life, try Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." I know, the authors cannot include everything, but to completely ignore certain genres like jazz seems limiting.I would also have liked a master list of music at the end of the book, organized by the chapters' subjects. The authors might also have given some hints about how to find pieces of music at Amazon MP3 downloads, with ideas about how to select between many versions of the same piece. My first exposure to this subject was at a lecture twenty years ago about the relationship between music and teaching struggling students to read, so this is not a new subject to me. For someone with no knowledge of the subject matter, this is a good place to start. For people who already have playlists they like, get this book at the library.

Power of Music
"Your Playlist Can Change Your Life" by Galina Mindlin, Don Durousseau, and Joseph Cardillo is a fun book that contains information on how music can be used as a force of healing. It was great that they all shared how to use musical playlists as instruments towards boosting happiness. The following is some of the engaging information shared in this book:Page 49: Link between music, exercise, and improved well-being.Pages 66-67: Ideas are shared on examples of playlists to create (such as the one for boosting a sense of calm).Page 141: It is explained why music increases memory storage in the brain.Pages 184-195: There is data given on combining music with a creative life. "Your Playlist Can Change Your Life" is a book that is best for the many who enjoy reading about ideas for using music towards greater joy.

I know it works
Went to a temporary employment agency and took a typing test. There was background music that I liked. I typed 110 words per minute with 3 errors!

Fun Way to Manage Moods & Productivity
This interesting little book offers a practical programme for managing one's state of mind. Written by scientists, it draws on the latest brain science to offer a fun way to take charge of the way one feels and thinks. It invites readers to learn how to really pay attention to the music they naturally enjoy and then to use that power of attention to affect their own brain waves. The book offers just the right amount of science and practicality - it does not bog readers down in unnecessary theoretical detail but just gives enough so that they can understand what it is that they are going to accomplish. Each chapter gives explicit instruction and lots of examples so that readers can easily apply what they learn: namely how to reduce anxiety, increase energy, improve focus and memory, relieve physical pain, heal stress and much more. It's simple and powerful. I highly recommend this book to my own clients and to any reader who wants to alter their mental state without medicine or substances.Sarah Chana Radcliffe, author "Raise Your Kids without Raising Your Voice."
