Conspiracy, strategy, and counter conspiracy. Great Mystery.
Captivating story of tragedy, injustice, greed, unsympathetic relatives, as well as conspiracy, counter conspiracy, and strategies to get justice for themselves, and worm the money from the ungenerous and greedy rich, only to wreck physical and emotional damage to body and soul. This is written in the language of Charles Dickens or Sherlock Holmes, or just old English if that makes sense. I never lost track of the main story in the details of the scenes, and It was good to read something than contemporary stories. This was well edited for ebooks and I totally enjoyed this story.Thank you for this free to me book. I'd be happy to get more by Wilkie Collins.

Magdalen goes to great lengths trying to recover a inheritance for herself and ...
This was a very enjoyable read albeit quite lengthy being over 700 pages. The story takes place in the first half of the 19th century and as with other writers of the time, Collins has injected this novel with about as much drama as possible. The synopsis is true to the story, also the quote “What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive” is quite appropriate. The protagonist of the story, Magdalen goes to great lengths trying to recover a inheritance for herself and sister Nora, and becomes involved with other colorful characters. On the whole I was highly entertained with this story.

A delightful surprise
Wilkee Collins has never been on my list of favorite authors, though I have been entertained by his other best sellers such as The Woman in White and The Moonstone. However, I was absolutely entranced by this story, especially in his character development of Magdalen, his protagonist. The plot is intricate, the twists and turns intriguing, even quite modern in presentation for a book written in the 1860s. Collins was an intimate friend of Charles Dickens but happily, to my mind, his style avoids the excesses and sentimentality of his friend’s writing. I was sorry to reach the last page.

Worth reading
When I started reading this book, I really hoped it would get better soon. If it had not been that this was my book clubs selection, I probably would have stopped reading it. However, it got much, much, much better. Character development truly improved, and the characters that were so insipid at the beginning, either fell away or became fully fleshed. The twists and turns, the what next's, the use of letters to describe the "between passages" kept this novel moving along. I highly recommend this book, just be prepared to hang in there for the first 100 pages.

One of my favorites. A love story, suspense, heartbreak and redemption. This has it all.
Although Wilkie Collins wrote this novel over a century ago the theme is very current. The parents of two girls both die within a week of each other. After the deaths the daughters are shocked to learn, even though their father had a will, the will is invalid and they have nothing. The younger of the two sets out to regain what they would have inherited and the story covers lengths which she goes in order to achieve her goal. The emotions felt by this reader ranged from surprise, suspense, and dread to compassion, sorrow and satisfaction. Even though there were instances in which Mr. Collins went into great detail the overall story moves quickly. I felt I might not like the conclusion but it was a fitting ending.I have read Moonstone and The Lady in White by Mr. Collins and enjoyed each, but this is by far my favorite. If you enjoy great fiction, I recommend this.

When They Said "Special" They Meant "Special!"
Somebody was on top of their game putting together this fine kindle book! Splendidly formatted with numerous wonderful illustrations scattered throughout, complete with an active table of contents and a link to a free full length audio recording. Perhaps the best Wilkie Collins book I have come across thus far and I have to say I wished every classic book was this well presented. Bottom line, definitely the one to own as for this vintage detective book!

As many Wilkie Collins works "No Name" is utterly captivating, well written, and ... unbelievable. But does this matter? It was written to entertain, and that it does splendidly. If there are a few twists too many, and there are, well, who cares? There is neither violence nor sexual content in the modern, graphic sense. There are undercurrents, and these are far more agreeable than the bang-bang or bang away of modern entertainment, so dismayingly uniform that one of necessity fights sleep. Not here! It's a robust Collins page turner.
