TulaMen's Unisex Gardener Lattice Hat

2nd update (July 19)-- Dropped a star. Today I wore this out for 2 hours in direct, bright sunlight and 100+ degrees in Texas. I have to tell you honestly, this hat got HOT. At one point, the crown was touching the top of my scalp and it got hot enough that I felt the top of my head burning and had to adjust the hat. Not sure if that's because of the material used (palm straw) or because of the dark color, but it was hot. The vents help a little when a breeze hits but the elastic sweat band is snug to the point that the hat feels a bit tight and doesn't breathe well. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy something else. Maybe those cheap, Dorfman Pacific rush straw hats are the way to go after all.5 stars for the Hat, 1 star for the seller (OutdoorPlay)UPDATE: (See initial review below) I ended up going forward with a return on the first hat I got after all. Im glad I did. Turns out the poor quality of the hat is receive was just a one-off defective unit. The second hat I received was noticeably better. Stitching was straight, ventilation weave around the crown was uniform, and there weren't the large spots of burnt straw like I saw in the first one. This new hat is nice enough to wear in public! While I bought this for yard work in the Texas sun, I plan to put a nice hat band in it for those times when I want to wear it around as a cowboy hat (like to the rodeo, etc.). It's a great sun hat with nice western style. Remember, these are hand made. Every one in a while, you'll get a hat that some villager made at the end of the work day. If you get a nasty one, you can return it and try again. Seems most of the hats are probably pretty nice. For a nice looking sample, I'd say the price is fair. That said, in the future, I will go out of my way to avoid the seller, OutdoorPlay (see below).INITIAL REVIEW: I wear hats almost everyday. I own a lot of hats. Everything from ball caps to boonies to beanies to berets, nearly everything. I even have a couple genuine pith helmets. So I've purchased a lot of hats and have some idea of what the quality vs price point should be. The Tula hat I received is greatly overpriced for the quality. The stitching is very crooked and there are several large, obvious blemishes in the weave. I went to ACE Hardware and paid around $10 for a Dorfman Pacific rush straw hat of the same style (vented crown gardener) and it actually has a neater finish.The quality of this Tula should be about $10.Everything else about this hat is good just like the other reviews have said. I wear a 7-1/4 (Large) and the elastic sweat band is snug when the hat is new. I have no doubt it will stretch and loosen over time with sweat. It's a thick hat that seems durable. Flexible but not crushable. Nice brown color. Has a smokie smell to it. Looks reddish brown like the photo so I think this hat is smoked or "toasted". You've read it all before. My main problem is the hat is only nice enough as a dirty work hat. You wouldn't wear this in public. It's too sloppy. At the time of this writing, they're charging nearly $40 for this hat. No way! That's WAY too much for this quality of workmanship.My hat was sold by OutdoorPlay. I paid approx $6 shipping (item not eligible for Prime). They make returns expensive and risky. I'd have to pay return shipping PLUS a 20% restocking fee. The cost of return shipping is more than 50% of the price of the hat (due to the size). Then AFTER they have inspected the hat and decided my return was for legit reasons, I will be refunded the purchase price (but not the 20% or the shipping both ways). So in light of all that, it's too expensive to return the hat. So I'm stuck with an ugly, overprice hat that doesn't look good enough to wear anywhere but doing dirty chores out back. I should have gone back to the hardware store and bought another $10 Dorfman Pacific.

This hat is sturdy and it provides really good protection from the sun. I bought it for gardening and I wear it every day after 10 am outside. It's not fancy, it's big and it looks like a man's hat but I have long hair and when it's hot, I hate my head being hot. So this hat being a bit wider it's perfect. For the price, equipping it with leather ties would be better than the shoelace like ties. Very practical for gardening.

I've tried on about a dozen straw/palm/lifeguard/gardener hats...both online and in stores, walmart, bass pro shops, billabong, you name it! This hat is absolute perfection without breaking the bank. I have a small head and it fits to perfection with some give, which fits my fiance as well. It came carefully packaged and with instructions to reshape it!! The rim is very large but bendable and sturdy at the same time. I've reshaped it no problem. Did i mention i love this hat?!!!

We own an 80 acre horse Farm and I wear it in the 50+ degree weather. This is the second one that I have bought and it is just as good a quality hat as my first one.

Love this hat!! I paid a bit more then when i bought it a few years ago but quality is still there.

The hat is well made with ventilation at the top to reduce sweaty head and strong adjustable tie to keep it on your head in the wind.

Possibly one of the greatest hats of all time! I ordered this one for my brother and I ordered the lifeguard hat for myself wide brim equally as impressive. The quality of construction is ummatched I would never buy any other hat. I order at least six of these every year. I own a landscaping company it’s not a luxury it’s a necessity. As a professional gardener I am constantly in the sun for hours on end. This hat is excellent! The elastic banding in the inside is genius. It keeps the hat steady in a strong wind and the decorative holes help the heat escape. I took off the leather chin strap, no need for it. It goes with me wherever I go and I make sure to keep it in my truck at the end of the day. Great quality product!Update as of 2019- Still love my hat! Takes a beating but still looking good.
