Q: Are these meant for coconut macaroons (with two 'o's) or French macarons (one 'o')?

I purchased it for the french macarons, but I have been using it for any cookies,scones and yes macaroons ! Wait until they have cooled and they will come off easily.

Q: Can you place this directly onto the oven shelf or must you place it on top of a cookie sheet?

I've only used them on a cookie sheet, but I would imagine that you could put them directly on the oven grate, though you wouldn't have as much structure as a pan when pulling it out of the oven.

Q: What is the diameter of the circles on the silpat?

The larger circle is 2.5"... the smaller one is 1.5". You didn't ask, but this product and a scoop will make a big difference in your cookies.
