Classic Early Hawkwind
Before the 'This Is Your Captain Speaking ...' box set, the live 1999 Party album was difficult to come by and pricey when you did. Live 74 is a truncated version of that album available at a budget price. It's a cracking album that sees the classic line up deliver an excellent performance one album on from Space Ritual which means a set list including gems from the 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' album. There is no Bob Calvert but Nik Turner does an admirable job of delivering the orations. His vocals are as good as they get and Dave Brock gives a good performance too. Lemmy's bass rumble is immediately identifiable as are his backing vocals, the whole band play with feeling and it sure comes across. Whilst the whole band are on form, really it's Nik Turner who has his stamp all over it. This album is a wonderful document of early Hawkwind, if you don't have 1999 Party then this one's definitely for you.

Memories
I have all these tracks and this isn't quite Space Ritual. That said it is a lot better than some of the live recordings that have crept out of the woodwork over the years and to my mind is a good representation of the live gigs of that time.

More Live Hawkwind...
Well, as a grumpy old Hawkwind fan, I always like to hear them from the glory days (before they became subsumed in NWoBHM and whatever alleyways presented themselves). This is an absolutely OK live tranche of them at around their best, but it still ain't no Space Ritual. I'm not one of those who claims that their career has been an uninterrupted path of brilliance - the first five albums are all you really need - but this one slightly lacks the magic of what came before. Like I said: absolutely OK. But no more.

Surprise!
I have been here before, I thought. Cheap live album. That base is a bit of a lottery. Hmmm! I checked out the amazon reviews and they were quite favorable. Part convinced I needed to order something with Ian Abrahams 'Sonic Assassins' book, so I took the plunge. I have not heard the 1999 album mentioned and expected this cast off to be a mediocre half an album rattled off just for the sake of it. I was pleasantly surprised. I checked the price again. This is excellent. I have a good few live albums and these songs are treated differently to those I have heard. A lot better than the newest long awaited offering. I shall now make up a live compilation C.D. for the car. Thankyou reviewers. The more you listen, the more you here. Or is that the madness of Hawkwind?

Media copy protected
Excellent CD. Music is great and as I did not get into Hawkwind until '79 a great opportunity to listen to an early live session. Why only 2 stars? The media is copy protected, shame on Amazon for not stating this. The in car CD player does not like the CD and my default music manager would not add it to my library. My secondary music manager did add it apart from the last track which it claimed was damaged. Using a third app I managed to get that one as well.A good album for the collection and am happy now it's on my Walkman but it was not the normally smooth import process we all expect.

...hallo, haven't we met before?...
Hallo, a Hawkwind live album. Something that used to come along on a fairly regular basis whilst the archives were being plundered. But they don't arrive with quite the same frequency the days so...hang on... Bugger. Let me start that review again. Some of you may remember this album from "The 1999 Party", the confusingly titled live album that was recorded live at the Chicago Auditorium on March 21 1974. That was a 2CD release which came out back in 1997.Well, this is a one disc, slimmed down version of that CD, replete with different title, artwork and sleeve notes. Which is a bit of a cheat, really. Bad EMI, bad EMI. But then of course I made the mistake of playing it, and I almost forgave them. Even though I have the "1999 Party" version, I just can't help myself when it comes to Hawkwind. Sure, it's not actually my favourite era of 'Wind, but there is so much good music forcing its way through the slightly flat mix.If you haven't got the earlier release, then this is a good purchase, as it's out and about at a bargain, knock down price, where you, yes you, can encounter the final thrashings of the Lemmy augmented beast as they swoosh, swirl and grind their way through such gems as 'You Know You're Only Dreaming', 'Brainstorm' and 'The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear In Smoke)'. And newbies who've just caught up via the BBC Four documentary will find this reflects the period covered there.

Good ole foot stomping sounds
I have been a fan of Hawkwind for the past 40 years and do enjoy listening to their music.. I have not seen any new albums until I accidently saw the one Amazon advertised on the boob-toob and this put the interest back into looking for any new musics they may have produced..
