Excellent resource on paper or on Kindle
I have three of the four paper editions of "100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades", and when I saw the availability of the Kindle edition I was excited. The print in the books and particularly the small print in the map drawings is challenging for my middle-aged eyes, and I hoped the e-book would let me pinch-to-zoom the maps on portable devices. I almost didn't buy because a previous review specifically addressed this and complained about the size of the maps. Ultimately, I wanted to see for myself and to support William L. Sullivan's affordable pricing model for the Kindle edition -- it was only $10, why not?I was delighted to find that all the photos in the e-book are in color, and can be double-tapped to fill the screen. The maps as well can be double-tapped to fill the screen, and pinch-zoomed if desired. Yes, you eventually run into limitations of the resolution of the scans, but they are entirely usable to me, legible on screen where I'd need glasses or a magnifying glass to read the smallest print in the drawings in the paper book. Higher-resolution scans would be a nice perk for future editions, but what we have is worth the price of admission. Now I've always got the book in my pocket on my phone. A no-brainer for $10. A big shout of thanks to William L. Sullivan for sharing all of his research with us, and so affordably on the Kindle platform.

truly incredible
sullivan's books are awesome, they make you feel like an old-hand insider, and lead you to all sorts of overlooked amazing experiences throughout oregon. the details are just insane, it doesn't seem possible that one person would have had the patience and experience to put all this together. the only thing to be aware of is that his drawings make things look much less steep/dramatic than they are. it would also help if the drawings made it obvious where you are in deep forest vs. exposed. i know it would be hard to draw all the trees/forest, but as-is, you don't realize how much of a hike is in a closed-in forest, rather than open-feeling. finally, it would be helpful if he included a "drama" score -- there are often so many nearby hikes to choose from that it's hard to pick one -- a few have been somewhat underwhelming in terms of payoff, so a drama score would help.

An invaluable hiking guide
I formerly lived with a roommate who had a couple of William Sullivan's books, and so I knew I needed to get my own. I'm glad I did because if I have a free day and want to go on a hike, this book is where I turn. It gives me the important info such as distance from my home, good directions, ease of the hike and distinctive characteristics such as whether it's appropriate to bring my dog along. I love Will's books. There's a lot of information on hikes out there but having a book like this is an invaluable guide.

Exceptionally clear and useful book for hiking in this area
I have a number of hiking books and this is one of the best. We used three of the hikes in May 2014 and found all the directions to be accurate and easy to follow. A great balance of the necessaries - like how to get to trail head and where to park, and the interestings - what you will see on the trail, etc. Also - it tells you the season the trails are generally open and free from snow. I have two other guidebooks to the area that don't tell you that so you could end up driving to a trail head only to find 6 feet of snow in May.... Buy this book if you hike in Central Oregon!

The best available by the most knowledgable hiker/writer.
I have many William Sullivan books, I think they are the best available. You have to learn to interpret and understand his map style, as it's a hand sketched style. His trail descriptions are right on, and you can tell he really knows the hikes, and the trails. I'm sure he has hiked every one. I gave this one as a gift. This is the book I'd buy again.

Sullivan is an amazing writer. I bought this book to help me ...
Mr. Sullivan is an amazing writer. I bought this book to help me find nice hikes in my area, but the writing is so beautiful that it almost feels like a documentary. I've already taken quite a few hikes mentioned in this book, but I plan to take them all!

Highly recommended!
Great, great book! Updated for 2014 which was nice. My son and I headed off to Blair Lake and the descriptions of everything were pretty good including the great recommendation for a little coffee shop in the small town you reach before heading up to camp. They were so tickled to know they had gotten mention in the book! I really like that Mr. Sullivan is conscientious enough to give a shout out to local businesses!

Great guide
Bought this book after a recommendation from a friend. Its a super guide to local hiking for me, and really well written, with comprehensive directions and helpful information. Thinking of hiking central Oregon, if so get this book.
