Happy tears
Wow, I absolutely loved this book. Jimmy is a drifter. Has been since he was 14 years old. Never stayed in one place too long. Didn’t want to get attached to any location or to anybody. One day he picks up a another drifter named Tom, a much older man who’s on his way to a town called Rattlesnake to try and make amends to his son Shane that he abandoned. Tom has written a heartfelt letter to Shane asking him to remember the few good times they had together. But something happens and Jimmy ends up finishing the journey the older man started. He finds Tom’s son, Shane, and intends to give him the letter but then life in Rattlesnake gets a little complicated. This is the kind of romance where my heart beats fast and heavy. My heart breaks for both Jimmy and Shane as they dance around each other’s feelings. Boy oh boy did I ugly cry but I enjoyed every tear that fell, I kid you not. I love the kind of books where my heart gets shredded and then gets mended and I’m left worn out and wrung out, in a good way which is why I’m rating this book 5 stars.

A gem of a story. Beautifully written.
I have been disappointed with contemporary mm romances in the past few months until this one. This has to be my favorite from this writer and one which I will reread, which is very rare for me as I have such a lot to get through. Deeply emotional and touching, Jimmy and Shane characters are so beautifully written and have me rooting for them till the last page. So glad for the last chapter which gives such a satisfying ending to these two men who have gone through so much and finally found a home with each other. Especially Jimmy who got under my skin right from the beginning and have me all teary eyed in parts. The story is told from Jimmy's view but in no way is Shane's character sidelined which is what fine story telling is all about. I also enjoy the town itself with its solid cast of characters. The atmosphere is quiet, the pace almost slow but never dull, which fits the story so well. This one is easily the best contemporary romance I have read this year. Such a gem. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Story!
Kim Fielding is an extraordinary storyteller. This is the story of two incredibly endearing but damaged men. Jimmy, a drifter, who gave a lift to an old man who died in his car leaving a letter Jimmy took as his duty to deliver to his son in Rattlesnake. And Shane, a bartender at an inn who gives him a job and a place to stay—he has been in an accident that ended his life as he knew it and forced him to find a new place in the world and accept his limitations. Jimmy has been unable to stay anywhere for years, he feels trapped and has to keep moving. Now, at Rattlesnake, with Shane, a trust and sense of belonging begin to develop, scaring him senseless. This is the story of their journey, told beautifully, it carries you with them, with their insecurities, their tenderness and their fears. It is a must read!

I absolutely loved this book
I absolutely loved this book. It was everything I was looking for when I picked it up. It got angst, lovable characters, including SCs, a fun setting, some sweet cuteness and good backstories.Let's not lie, the plot is pretty straighforward and I can't say I was surprised by where it went and how it ended (although that last chapter is pretty great and I loved that the author didn't write the obvious ending) and it's a bit insta-lovey. The writing style didn't win me over right away but I got used to it and in the end, despite all that, I cannot bring myself to put it less than 5 stars because the characters are so good. Their weaknesses and strengths, how they deal with things and talk about things. Their history too.Great book, highly recommend. Plus, it features older characters and that's always nice to find

A real beauty!
“Don’t wait. You got stuff in your life needs fixin’, you gotta fix it now, while you can.”Rattlesnake by Kim Fielding is a realistically probable love story because of its depth and complexity of the main characters. This is not a story of love with electricity or fire and definitely not with cover-magazine types guys. There are lots of people like Jimmy Dorsett, drifters, but nobody sees them. They lived in crap motels, under bridges and in empty buildings and when they die, nobody misses them. They're always running away from place to place.Shane Little is former cowboy with a traumatic brain injury by a tragic accident in his past. He has a amazing huge family who stay behind him as a solid foundation.“It began with a man alone in the wide, empty desert driving a decrepit old Ford with a dead man riding shotgun. But the tale progressed to two men together, alive and dancing and ready to establish their very own home. Jimmy was confident the ending was a long, long time away. “Well, this is exactly what I want every romance to be like. It is a brilliant example how the simplicity could be a real beauty. This is one of the best books I've read this year. It was my first book by this author and definitely will not be my last

An amazing gem of M/M romance !
A beautifully written sparkler in M/M romance ! Jimmy Dorcett, 43, bearded, worn looking and faded. He's never had a warm, welcoming home. His life is about to change as he picks up an old guy hitchhiking in the cold. Tom had a story, and Jimmy was happt to drive him to find his long lost son. The trip holds a twist, and we see our Jimmy end up in Rattlesnake. The historic town held many surprises and even more interesting people. He'll stick around. Jimmy finds himself drawn to Shane, 33, the limping bartender cowboy, who is tall, slim and scared. The character's stories are fascinating, and the writing is superb. We feel like we are there; with magnificent descriptive windows into the town and lives therein.Super anticipation and hot, raw sexiness shine through. Issues arise and are handled. As the tale moves along we understand our men, their fears and hopes, their problems and solutions. Marvelous !An AMAZING GEM in the M/M romance world.Highly recommended to all. Jimmy is like sand, the harder you try and hold on ...
All the stars and all the feels! This is my first Kim Fielding book and I have no clue how that's possible...Jimmy is like sand, the harder you try and hold on to him the easier he slips through your fingers. He really is a lovable rogue. Never really bad but had found himself in bad situations and has done a few things he's not proud of in the course of surviving.Jimmy is broken.Shane is scarred. He limps and he's had to give up the job/life that he loved.Shane is broken. However, their spirits soar, shining through the bleakness of their sad stories.But...even though they made my heart physically hurt, these two men don't demand sympathy. Empathy maybe, compassion definitely, but never sympathy. They have been beaten down and almost destroyed but they have chosen to stand up and refuse to yield. Despite the odds that are stacked against them. They're both scared of getting hurt, both fear they are not enough.Shane is so gentle with Jimmy. He never asks for more than Jimmy can give. He somehow just knows how far he can push him. This book made me ache and swoon in equal measure. And yet it's slow and soft, there's no big excitement it's about every day life and two desperately damaged men finding each other and learning to trust and realising that something the strength you need comes from women other than yourself. This is just so wonderfully written. It's tender and loving and sweet and heartwarming. It's breathtakingly beautiful.

**** 4.5 Stars****This was beautiful. It's hard to explain but it felt like an old movie, soundless but rich in its essence and moreover, meaningful and deep. The writing is quite magical, it conveys an aura of tranquility and at times it diffuses with a melancholy tone but it only adds authenticity to the story.Rattlesnake was such a unique read!I really liked it.

Beautifully Written
Beautifully written, evoking a real sense of emotion, place & character. I was rooting for Jimmy, wanting him to get something good in his life after 29 years of abject poverty & loneliness. There's little real drama in the tale, but it is a beautiful gentle story that pulls its punches in the way Jimmy slowly reveals the details of his his life. Added to this Shane's story, also heart-breaking and you have a really lovely read.Highly recommended & a no quibble 5*s.

This is such a beautiful story it totally melted my heart. Jimmy has had such a hard childhood that he doesn’t know how to hope for better things in life and then he meets Shane who is sweetness personified.

What a great story. Quiet, but deep characters, rich description and a masterful building of emotion. Quality writing. Would definitely read again.

Really touching tale
I loved this tale. Fielding has a way of allowing you to feel the weight of pain in her characters’ pasts without becoming overly sentimental. It feels true, not emotional pornography. The way these two found their way to each other is very touching and leaves you with a warm glow in your heart.

loved it
I've just read the first review and its spot on. It has no great plot - it's all about a drifter and a bartender. It's pretty slow at first but not boring, then the further in you get the more you love the characters. That's the real gem in this book - the mcs are so lovable and by the end they have stolen your heart. Great book

Fantastic and bittersweet with a well deserved happy ending
I'm sitting here wondering about how I bypassed this book three times. I was convinced nothing would happen. And in some respects it doesn't. There's no Prince Charming. There's no fairy godmother. But this is a fairy tale. It's full of sweetness and heartache and above all forgiveness and love. You won't regret this book.

This book is just wonderful and I adore it.
OMG - I just realized I never really reviewed this book. Now I feel really bad because I love it so much that I bought the audio, too.Jimmy is one of the most memorable characters I've ever encountered in a book. I mean, who makes a vagrant the main character in a romance? Well, Kim Fielding does and she does it so very well.At first reading it I wondered - Jimmy felt washed out, done, finished, actually...kind of old...and yet there was something, that little stubborn something. And then Shane - he was like the complete opposite somehow and yet... I loved how these two men came together, completed each other in a way they didn't even know they missed out before, didn't even know they would fit. This book is just wonderful and I adore it.

Such a magnificent journey
You read. You even read some great books. And then, from time to time, you read a book like this one.Not being an English native speaker, it is difficult for me to find the exact words. Let me say that this book draws you in. Not because of angst, not because you want to know how it will end (although you do), but because you want to experience the journey that it's taking you on.You want to be with Jimmy as he slowly opens himself to appreciate life, you want to be with Shane as he gets that he should forgive himself.I loved Shane's resilience, I loved even more Jimmy's reserve and honesty : the fact that however rough his life had been, and however empty he thought he was, he was a good man through and through. The author also gave us some wonderful secondary characters, building "an army holding Shane , but also Jimmy's backs" ; making us part of this army. This is a book that makes you spend such a great time. A book that I know I will read again, because it doesn't matter that I know where it's taking me ; I may want to go through the journey again.
