My 7-year-old LOVES these Joss stories
My daughter loves this series about Joss. These are great stories that wonderfully show how much kids (or anyone) can accomplish when they have perseverance. This is a great lesson whether a child has a disability or not. My daughter tends to be a perfectionist & melts when something doesn't come easily to her. Or if something that she is great at (like art) doesn't turn out the way she envisioned. Having someone besides Mom point out life skills, like grit, can be really helpful sometimes. :-)

Joss: Touch the Sky
Joss Kendrick is the 2020 American Girl Doll of the Year. She is the first hearing impaired American Girl doll. She also surfs and is a cheerleader! The book that she comes with, Joss, is about surfing. Touch the Sky, which is sold separately, is about cheerleading. My nine year old daughter bought Joss and she was excited to read this book. I’d never actually read one of the many, many American Girl books before and I was pleasantly surprised. This wasn’t a hastily dashed off, gimmicky book. It was well written and substantial. Joss is dealing with some serious stuff, like fear of failure. Also, she and her friends compete in a talent show and through a serious of missteps, end up winning first prize. Joss struggles with the fact that they won, even though they didn’t really deserve to.My favorite thing about this book is the Joss’s hearing loss is totally normalized and I think hearing impaired little girls will be appreciate that too. This is not a book about Joss struggling to overcome her hearing loss. She is well-adjusted, her friends know how to adapt their actions when around her (making sure they are facing her when talking to her, etc.) and it’s basically a nonissue. This is book is about Joss having normal problems that all little girls have.My daughter and I both enjoyed this book. It’s made me want to read more American Girl books, especially ones that go with the historical dolls as I’ve heard they are particularly good. Touch the Sky is a great book for any child, whether or not they own the doll or are hearing impaired.

Great story about a modern-day athletic girl
My 10 year old daughter loves American Girl dolls and reading, so the American Girl books are great for her. They each have a theme or lesson with a positive message. The books have pictures throughout that help illustrate what is happening in the story.Joss: Touch the Sky is the 2nd book about this character, who is the American Girl 2020 girl of the year. Joss is a very athletic 5th grader who participates in cheerleading, skateboarding and surfing in the story. Joss also happens to be hard of hearing and uses a hearing aid and ASL. I love how this is portrayed in the story - sometimes Joss misses words or it’s difficult to understand someone, but it never holds her back from doing the things she wants to.There are 3 major plot points to this story, and it’s interesting to see how Joss responds to each one, and how it leads to growth throughout the story. The first part is about the school talent show, which doesn’t go how Joss had planned. Next involves surfing at a new spot that is much more difficult than where she has surfed before. Both of those plots lead up to the final part, where Joss’s cheer team participates in a competition. While Joss doesn’t always have the best response to these situations, we are able to watch her gain confidence, learn to trust herself and her team, and show good sportsmanship. The end of the book includes a glossary of cheer, skateboarding and surf terms, along with a one page discussion guide. This book is great for grade school girls. It positively portrays a girl that is hard of hearing and into multiple sports, while covering themes that almost any girl would be able to relate to. The main character shows growth, and her great sportsmanship at the end makes her a good role model. This is the type of book that I like to see in my daughter’s book collection!

And inspiring story but definitely for second grade or above.
My girls are getting ready to turn 6 but both have American dolls so I decided to read this chapter book to them in the evenings. They're both reading well but have not progressed to this level yet. Even with me reading this to them I do think it was a bit above where they are at now. It is however a really great story that I enjoyed myself. It's about a little girl with a hearing deficiency and how she becomes brave and overcomes obstacles. There's all the drama that you find in young groups and fun things as well. A skateboarding dog, surfing, s little danger, competitions, role models and a little self-doubt make for an interesting read. I was particularly impressed with the fact that her cheer teacher could communicate with her any unique way so she could perform on her cheer team. I would definitely say that second grade and above would probably do well with this book. I hope my girls continue to stay interested and want to learn more about the lives of the American Girls. They're great role models and show girls can do anything!
