Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the Blues rockers' 1968 sophomore album. Boogie with Canned Heat was the artistic and commercial high water mark for this talented group that was based in Los Angeles and steeped in the blues tradition. This album, the band's second, began with sessions in Chicago with some blues covers that mined much the same area as their excellent first release. A funny thing happened when the band returned to the studio however as they came up with outstanding self-written material and wound up concentrating on their own creations for the album release. The earlier blues covers are added as bonus tracks along with an early take of on the Road Again! This expanded edition of the album includes a sparkling new mastering and a new essay as well as the aforementioned blues covers that did not make the final cut for the initial release. This work represents the pinnacle of Canned Heat's work in the studio.

BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT / ICONOCLASSIC Version (released Dec 2012)
First of all, my review is for the Iconoclassic CD version released in December of 2012. Let's get THAT clear. Apparently, Amazon will put any old review of the album and it's NOT specific to the particular version of the album (that we all know, can vary widely). I have the BGO version that they edited Fried Hockey Boogie down from eleven minutes to less than seven minutes. THEY DO NOT DO THAT ON THE ICONOCLASSIC VERSION. OK, now that is clear. No real need to review the album. It's a stone(er) classic. I really owe my love of the blues to Canned Heat and Johnny Winter because as a young "Junior Groover" they exposed me to music I had not heard before. Not to many blues numbers on Monkees or Beatles albums. Anyway, if you need a copy of this album (and you do), THIS is the one to get. The sound is as you remember it from the vinyl. Clear 60's stereo channel separation and everything is mixed "in your face." The six bonus tracks were recorded in the early stages of the sessions. It would have been nice if they would have included the single mixes of "On The Road Again" and "Boogie Music", but you can't have everything in life. One last point, avoid like the plague the Magic (from France) versions of Canned Heat albums or ANY album for that matter. The discs denigrate in the cases to the point that they don't play anymore. I have a Magic version of "Hallelujah" that a nasty film on it as we speak. So anything by Magic: BEWARE!!

The First 2 Albums ARE Their Greatest Hits
Note: This review is on the BGO Canned Heat/Boogie with Canned Heat.If you're a casual listener, I guess the best of Canned Heat is OK, but if you're in that "They were at Woodstock, John Mayall dug em, Nothin but the blues" lovers, These 2 Albums ARE their best albums (some people will also add "Living the Blues" but I really must disagree). This album is from Great Britain, and doesn't go through a lot of over remastering (which as a blues aficionado,I really like). It's like listening to the albums minus the scratches. The download quality is actually pretty good. I like it. It brings back a LOT of memories. This, Clapton (via Cream), Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hot Tuna, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Jimi Hendrix were initially my introduction to the blues. Since that time I've went further down the rabbit hole, and discovered how far it goes. These Albums are ROOTS for me, but I still get a kick out of them. How long ago were my roots? Well, Let's just say that these albums were NOT oldies, I heard the first album on 8 track, and Boogie with was on a label called Liberty. For what it's worth, Larry Taylor (Bass) played a lot of John Mayall, and Mayall wrote a song about Bob Hite called "The Bear" (a little trivia for you). Also Henry Vestine (guitar) plays some really wicked fuzz guitar on these albums. Enjoy. :)

Lookin to Open More (Future Blues?) Canned Heat
Like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band I cannot quite explain what took me so long to FINALLY listen to a CANNED HEAT album. As for starting with BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT Deluxe Version (almost like 2 albums) I am already considering buying more Canned Heat.My mild complaint could be my totally unfair assessment of the "My Crime" song and the factual circumstances of song based on marijuana arrest - of Canned Heat - in Denver: C'mon guys you tryin' to tell us you were squeaky clean of herb charges? No way, you "long hairs!". Plus that, the so standard use of the Hoochie Coochie Man beat on "My Crime". Sounds like kind of a boring "cover up" story to me. But, that could, certainly, be my very unfair assessment.I was shocked to read (six page, simple story liner notes) not only did Al "The Owl" (bad eyes - great nicknames for all in this very good-humored, blues band) Wilson die in 1970 but also Bob "The Bear" Hite in 1981 and guitarist Henry "Sunflower" Vestine in 1997. Too early for all, obviously. Then, through my deductive reasoning powers, I realized that John Mayall's greatest (my opinion naturally) album was NOT just a rare, relative collection of unknown "Bluesbreakers". Instead of a famous guitar player with Mayall (which was generally the case Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, etc...) the famous one was bass player Larry "The Mole" Taylor from Canned Heat (see Mayall's Jazz Blues Fusion LIVE 1972 album HIGHLY recommend if u have not heard it). Ah, what a small, blues musical world; and then the realization that "The Bear" song from a '68 recording IS Bob "The Bear" Hite from Canned Heat's earliest incarnation days. Mayal even mentions Canned Heat by name in "The Bear" song on Laurel Canyon album (1968). Go figure (says I).BUT, Don't Forget To Boogie With Canned Heat. This is over 68 minutes of music and the redo of the famous "On the Road Again" is longer and well worth a slightly different perspective. Wilson's falsetto vocals seem clearer on bonus version. "Shake, Rattle and Roll" is good to hear, also, done just differently enough led by "The Owl's" harmonica and "The Bear's vocals.Listen to "The Hunter"(Bonus track). Sound a lil' like The Doors, anyone?Dr. John assisted on two of the original album songs (piano) and horn arrangements.Lots to Boogie the blues to on this one.FYI: The original 10 songs of Boogie With Canned Heat cover 44 minutes; and was the original (2nd) Canned Heat album (1967).

No need to get so steamed
I think the last reviewer got it right, not the guy who submitted the first two. I own both this CD and the best of discussed above, so I was able with my burner to make up a perfectly good Boogie album out of the tracks from this one plus the "Fried Hockey Boogie" from the best of (my version of which is called Cookbook). If you like these albums, especially Boogie, as much as I do, you should not be deterred from buying this, which is a perfectly good digital copy of the LP if not exactly a remaster. The LP quality was excellent to begin with, so for most listeners it should not be a problem. Worth it just for the full-length "On the Road Again," which appears only as the single version on most other compilations, and for all the long-lost songs like "My Crime" and one of my favorites, "An Owl Song." What bothers me more than a cut Fried Hockey is that on the BGO reissue of Living the Blues (apparently only available as a physical import CD) as well as on Cookbook, on the song "Boogie Music," they left off the wonderful 1920's fade-out of an old 78 that seems to have been the inspiration for the tune of "Going Up the Country." I had to transcribe my original 45 to get that.
