Simple, small, adjustable level audio DAC
The Techole HS203-BK Digital Audio Converter (DAC) has optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs, and the adjustable audio output on RCA/Phono outputs is switched via a 3.5mm headphone jack. It takes its power from a USB-A outlet, just a few milliamps, but it needs to be clean power for clean audio output. It is very well made in a small extruded alloy housing with metal endplates. Leads supplied include a 1metre USB-A to micro power lead, a 1metre coax, and a 1metre Toslink fibre. If you use the Toslink fibre remember to remove its little protective end-caps before plugging the fibre into the sockets. I also added a ferrite bead to the micro end of the USB power lead, and I bought a plug-top supply for the installation. My main application is taking music from the living room CD player’s coax digital output through a hole in the wall via a 3metre S/PDIF cable to a pair of small self-powered speakers in the kitchen. I added a pair of short RCA leads from my stock of bits.If the Toslink input is active it will take over from the coax, even if there is no audio signal on the laser, but that is to be expected when there is only one DAC chip in the box. I would have preferred the priority to have been the other way round. The RCA/Phono outputs work well, but the 3.5mm earphone jack makes poor connection to all my assorted earphones and adaptor leads. I don't understand why because I can see the contacts inside the hole, but at least it gets through the switched contacts to the RCA/Phonos where I need the sound. It loses a star because of the very poor earphone socket. So simple, so easy, just plug and go, so long as you forget about the earphone socket. One can add refinements if fussy, but they are not really necessary.

TV has no headphone jack solution
Same as all other reviews. I bought because my TV doesn’t support a headphone jack and I like to just be able to use same headphones for all my consoles and TV at the same time.Used optical, plug in use and play.I would seriously recommend the one with volume control dial. Don’t get the previous one as you cannot control the volume through headphones on TV settings.Happy purchase, does what I wanted it to do in my particular case. TV doesn’t have headphone jack. I really love the volume control dial but I usually don’t have to use that much.

Good but very sensitive to power device
Let me say after the fixes i did this works great or at least its working okay now with only some quiet crackling. My issue is the usb port on my tv and on the back of a sky q mini box both caused pops and hisses on my earphones which were fairly loud.I worked out it was the power because changing the usb cable to a better quality one reduced the issue a fair bit and changing between the usb ports made different noises.Long story short I am now using a new USB cable and a dedicated usb power plug that youd get with a phone and thats stopped or at least heavily reduced the noises.I havent tested the optical cable that came with as i already had a better graded one and was known working as the ones provided were cheap looking. One thing i will say the fit and finish on the volume control and the outer housing is great and the volume control for earbuds is great

Great unit to transfer analog audio to digital
New TVs don't come with AUX or RCA (red and white) outputs anymore. So this is the perfect solution to using an old stereo or speakers with your new TV. I'm using a very old Sony Hi-Fi Amp & FM radio linked to my TV to use the speakers as my TV output as I can't afford a sound bar at the minute. It works great and does exactly what I need it to. The volume control and headphone out is a nice touch too. Just don't ramp up the volume if you're using an amplifier like I am as it'll peak/distort far too much. I've balanced this out though and found an EQ preset on the Hi-Fi to match. Overall - great buy and feels well built. I've had one of these in the past and it blew due to the output / volume being too high.

Clever bit of kit.
Connected it to the optical output on a Samsung 4K TV. Then plugged a stand alone Bluetooth transmitter to the Convertor output and connected Bluetooth headphones to the transmitter. This is giving a much higher volume through the headphones than just connecting the Bluetooth headphones directly to the Samsung TV.

Will work with headphones so sound for most is still normal.
Did what I wanted, need to use headphones as I am quite deaf and cant hear much when watching TV with others. My headphones, plugged into TV jack on our TV cuts out sound to everyone else which doesn't work. This unit splits the two so I can use headphones but everyone else can watch and hear the TV as normal. It doesn't allow you to switch the TV sound off though with any sort of built in switch on the unit but if your headphones have a built in volume control you can turn the volume right down to 0 on the TV remote and still hear through your headphones. If your headphones don't have volume facility then just plug the headphones back into the TV jack if watching on your own, no real problem and the unit is quite cheap but good quality.
