David Hockney's Dog Days

Superb Hockney Brushwork and a Whole Lot of Heart
The portraits in this book of David Hockney's Dachshunds -- all warmth, sleepy puppy breath and typical Doxie side-eye -- may well be the sensual opposite of his cool blue swimming pools. This book is a valentine to his beloved dogs. But it's also an absorbing study in brushstroke economy, where Less is More and his little companions coalesce from quick-but-sure movements of Hockney's brushes. That he placed paints and brushes all around the house to capture them in the moment (and mostly napping), makes for the least stilted pet portraiture you are likely to ever find between two covers. This book makes an excellent gift.

Sweet Book for Fans of Dachshunds or Hockney
I bought this book for an owner of two dachshunds. The book is small, with good quality paper and color. Interspersed with the reproductions of the paintings are many sketches and studies done in a variety of ways - carefully sketched or wildly scribbled. If you are a fan of Hockney's work, you will appreciate the attention he gives to his pets and if you are a fan of weenie dogs, you will appreciate how he can capture their personalities. Not an in depth work of the artist's talent, but it is a fun book for the fan of both dachshunds and Hockney. Very happy with this book.

For the dachsdhund lover!
How lovely! An art book about dachshunds! Of course, they are mainly sleeping, dachshunds are too energetic to be captured with a camera, let alone a paintbrush. But the sketches add to the paintings and one can easily recognize the true nature of these dogs: philosophic, intelligent and full of natural authority. Although my favourite picture was a photograph of Hockney and his dogs and the pillow (in most paintings) with Hockney's paintings all around them. The book tells more about us dachshund lovers than the dogs, we are a strange bunch with an odd sense of humour and a deep passion for these dogs. Well, only a person with an odd sense of humour and a lot of patience would love - and manage to live with - a dachshund...A perfect gift for dachshund lovers, people interested in dogs or art - or children, who think art is dull and never funny. The paintings are full of love. Thank you, David Hockney : )

I love this book
I love this book. for anyone who has tried to draw their fur baby, it's not as easy as it looks. He captures the moods and personalites, as well as the beautiful curves, of his friends. The pictures are good on an abstract level, as well as representational level.

Dog Days; an artist's perspective.
Most of the reviews on this page have been written from the point of view of dog-lovers; I`m one too, but I also paint. This excellent, compact volume consists of 84 illustrations in all with 46 paintings reproduced in colour, plus close-up details from many of them. These are supported by drawings, beautifully capturing his little pets at rest - it gives the impression they sleep a lot, but really, dogs are a difficult subject for any artist. The paintings are characteristically bold in colour and display Hockney`s deft brushwork. The illustrations have in some cases been presented with additional graphic work surrounding them; there are playful frames, easels and background details drawn in as part of the layout by Hockney himself. The paintings are faithfully reproduced with several full-page or double-page spreads which emphasise the languorous nature of dachshunds in repose.I got this book for myself initially, but I often get a student turning up at my class who wants to immortalize a pet on canvas, so this book provides some nice examples to follow - the book has certainly inspired and delighted everyone who`s seen it so far.A nicely presented art book at a good price that deserves to have the same level of popularity that Henry Moore's sheep sketchbook achieved.

Lovely studies of his dogs by David Hockney
Bought as a Christmas present for my husband. We are both fans of David Hockney and of dogs. This book features studies of Hockney's beloved dogs sleeping in his studio. My husband loved it and the way the 'heaviness' of the sleeping dogs has been so beautifully portrayed.A well received gift and a lovely little book.
