CSS: The Missing Manual

A good invesment !
I really like this book. it has exercises and is super easy to follow. I didn't become an expert because is not my goal. But I can still have fun and build my own websites offline. It is so cool to see the changes you can make on a site, change the navigation style, and color. OMG, so much fun! I have a pretty good understanding of the structures and how CSS works with HTML5. These are computer languages that even if you advance in your skills, there are some websites still using the early versions before those and this book explains a little about it what works with or what won't work, not in depth. But everything else is relevant. Great book. I was in TX on 02-14 2021 in the storm and to survive the cold with my pets I burn most of my books, something I never thought I need it to do. I'll buy this book again.

McFarland for an excellent teaching book
This book is very well done. The author went to a lot of effort to create tutorials in each chapter that allow you to see theeffects of CSS properties in an incremental manner. Plus, he provides the completed tutorial as well, so you can save timeby copying and pasting rather than having to type in every CSS block or property setting. I appreciate that. Thank youMr. McFarland for an excellent teaching book. I've been able to make use of the information directly in my work right away.In addition his explanations of the CSS properties are very clear and helpful. There are a few typos in the book, but thatalways happens. Previously I had gotten the CSS 3 book by Gasston but that book is a little more advanced and fast pacedand doesn't have all the tutorials that this one has. Highly recommended.

This is a phenomenal book!
This is a phenomenal book!It covers all of the details of CSS and explains everything in a very clear, precise and easy to understand language. It uses an "in other words" construct, where it explains even more clearly and from another perspective certain concept. The design of the book is beautiful, which is to expect from a CSS book, perfect margins, justified text, and from the side, you can see borders of different Parts of the book in the form of gray lines. It is very comprehensive, clear, detailed, well designed and organized. I would highly recommend this book.

Great survey of CSS
This was the textbook for an advanced html/css class that took at a community college. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever used. The chapter on pseudo elements/classes alone answered so many questions. My only complaint is that the SASS/LESS chapter was a bit out of date—the SASS tool used by the book is obsolete. They should have a webpage updating users on the latest tools as they seem to change like the weather. Other than that, it’s a must have reference with good tutorials. As are most Missing Manuals books.

A great resource for the novice and intermediate CSS junkies.
Great book. I really love it.I had a chance to get along with the third edition. For the last two months, it played a role of a reference book as well as some W3 Schools web sites. Now, when the 4th edition is out, I didn't even bother to think, should I buy it or not.Well, I didn't have a chance to scan around all the book, but what I read yesterday was - flexbox and sass implementation. And it was - WOW. The author did a great job yo explain the new layout system as well as the preprocessing syntax and minor details of sass. All in all, sorry for my english and don't even bother to think, whether you need this book or not. You do!

3 editions of the team book.
This is the 3rd edition of this book that I'm reading. I bought the 1st and 2nd editions and now the 4th. That says a lot about how good this series is. I really needed to get up to speed with HTML5 and CSS3 and was delighted to find this highly readable hàndbook by the same author offering exactly that. Whilst you only need basic HTML knowledge, those who have been building websites for a while longer will not be bored. Loads of useful stuff and some nice projects to work through.

It is an excellent course and other then one or two minor issues ...
This is the second edition I have purchased. It is an excellent course and other then one or two minor issues in the tutorials, which are a lot of fun, the course has moved me to the next level. It is important to have a basic understanding of HTML but I found the book engaging and I now use it as an excellent reference. I can't wait for the update to Dreamweaver CC 2015 I'm not a very good typist so I will let DW handle the basic typing and use What I learned to tweak the CSS. Buy the book you won't regret it, and by the way it's massive.

It is well written and easy to understand with good tutorials following each chapter
I found this book to be very informative and it taught me quite a few new things about CSS. It is well written and easy to understand with good tutorials following each chapter. My one complaint about this book is that it didn't go into much detail about media queries. It also didn't even mention the rest of the @ rules.Despite the lack of @ rules, I still give this book 5 stars because it is packed full of very useful knowledge.

Perfect for my needs
Good for someone who has been introduced to CSS and web design already and wants to get to an intermediate/expert level. Not the most up to date but still very happy

Excellent. Picked Up So Much.
I'm a quarter of the way through this book and I have picked up SO much. I never tried to learn CSS before I have an online website and I always just did trail and error to get what I wanted and never bothered to learn what was happening and why. (A very frustrating way of doing things) Just after reading this book for a few days I now know what's going on. I'm still no expert and it will take a lot more of putting things into practice but I would recommend this book and as a reference too. I'll be looking to see if the author has Javascript next. I can't recommend it enough. CSS does seem overly complicated and not an exact science but I believe I will limit a lot of frustrations with this book.

Where NOT to Learning about these important topics
I am not a "dummy" with these topics, as I've been coding HTML for years, and nibbling at CSS. But this book is NOT a book for beginners, or for dummies!Without laying out, for example, basic coding, it launches into such esoteric and probably less-needed sub-topics such as Effects, Transforms and Styling Gradients. To me, that's Advanced CSS, and not what I was looking for at all.So, if a reader wants basic rules and coding for inserting Tables, Images etc. into a web site look for another book - don't waste your money on this one! It will be gathering dust on my bookshelf for quite a while.
