Pu Songling (Jackie Chan), a legendary demon hunter, is asked to investigate the mysterious disappearances of young girls from a small village. When he discovers evil forces are kidnapping the girls to feast on their souls, he sets out to save humanity from the inhuman invasion journeying through hidden worlds and colorful dimensions in this fantastical martial arts action-comedy.

The emphasis is on fantasy related to Chinese (and Japanese?) religion/ folklore, not martial arts.
This movie surprised me in a couple of ways: 1) I assumed that Chan would be the co-actor sharing ample screentime with others but he really is the main actor (2) I assumed, especially because of the box's "martial arts fantasy adventure" explanatory scrawl, that this would have a lot of martial arts hand to hand combat and it has little though Chan does put some up. There is a lot of action, to be sure, but it is of the magical mystical kind. "The Knight of Shadows" is lighter fare and feels like it's aimed more to the younger or tween set as Chan, the titular knight, is a hunter of bad demons and makes use of good ones some of whom are his sidekick. These characters strongly reminded me of Japanese Yokai spirit creatures and the four that accompany Chan on his knight's errands are very visually suited for the younger audience. One is a floating baby who can effect memories, one is a pig-man who is very much like a dog, one is a green impish tater tot that farts, and the wildest one is a tree-man who takes many forms including a boat. These magical characters feature prominently in the story.Chan's quest brings him into conflict with a mirror demon (a beautiful female) and a robe demon (another beautiful female). The robe demon was once a girl who fell in love with a scroll demon who inhabited her shadow and thus turned her. If none of this makes sense to the western mind remember that's because this is fantasy based in eastern folklore and religion. The scroll demon seeks to save the girl he turned and she doesn't want to be saved. Those are the main conflicts of the movie.Old time fans of Jackie Chan's movies may, if they can see beyond all of the CGI effects (usually quite good and certainly entertaining as they add to a bright and dazzling magical landscape), styles and themes used frequent in his earliest movies. There is ample physical comedy, characters who can't ever seem to take what is going on seriously, and very obvious characters. There are also inventive fight scenes with the standout scene in this movie one where Chan's knight fights the mirror demon who can move through mirrors (shiny metallic plates) that are all over the room thus a hand strikes from one place while a foot comes from another to give him a kick in the backside. This is a highlight and practically worth the price of admission alone.Overall for the type of movie it is, a fun and fairly safe eastern family fantasy adventure, it succeeds and is a lighthearted enjoyable time where one can marvel at the magic and the visuals and leave it all behind when the viewing is done. Chan's amiable presence and personaity is well represented. 3.75 stars.

Classic Chinese Fairy Tell
This follows the 'classic Chinese fairy tell' method so it is full of demons, sorcerers, assorted 'little folk' and unusual characters and some 'over acting' which is classic in Chinese films. Very well done but not with the usual 'Jackie' stunts, which is OK. This disk is by default in Mandarin but the English dubbing is good and it sounds like Jackie does his own voice. You have to turn on ENGLISH and TURN OFF subtitles on Disk menu. For those not use to the Chinese fairy tell method it might take some getting use to but I found it enjoyable. There is a good mixture of live action and well done special effects. I hope he does another one.

Different but enjoyable & interesting enough
This is a fantasy-comedy-romance (not Jackie) movie. There are some action but not the typical martial arts action from Jackie's movies. It is also a lighthearted fun and not the typical fun filled of his other movies.I think this is a good change or variation from Jackie. This movie feels slow but not boring. Maybe I am used to an almost non stop action typical of Jackie's movies. It was almost two hours but it did not feel that long. The CGI is good. Though it is supposed to be about demons but it is not scary at all. This is appropriate for kids, not violent, not scary and not sensual.A good change up for a Jackie fan. Enjoy it but don't compare it to his other great movies.

Very creative, original
Jackie Chan surprised me. I thought he was retired. A fun silly romp in CGI land. It's better than your average green screen movie. Excellent use of color. Kids will love this movie. I didn't care for it, Jackie Chan has done way better movies. But Jackie does give a few rare glimpses of his former glory so this review gets an extra star.

DVD was inside of the Blu-Ray case.
The Distributor needs to recall all of their stock and get it right, because obviously consumers are getting the wrong product and not what they paid for. Horrible, and it was scratched too.

NOT Jackie Chan, Ancient Chinese Demon Hunter
Trying to explain the movie is very hard, but, basically, Jackie Chan has a lot of captured cute cartoons who are his friends, lots of child-age jokes are made, demons are never scary or a real threat (think "bad fairy" not faerie, and not ghosts).Take 90s live action Casper, mix in Space Jam, and tell it with a thick Chinese filter. All 3 parts are good, but the result leaves more questions than answers. Get ready to say "ummm, okaaaay" while hurriedly piecing together your best guess to your kid. Most questions are explained within 10 seconds if one doesn't pause, along with something else that needs to be known.I was expecting a live action Kubo (which is a definite watch!), and I got Casper-Space Jam.100% appreciate the costume consistency, so I was rarely wondering who someone was, nor was my 8 year oldThe digital special effects are great: whispy and dreamlike, cartoons, and phantasmagoria at the appropriate times, sometimes seamlessly together!I asked my 8 year old, and she said a "Watch again, but soon, while I remember the questions' answers."-1 for not being as implied, -1 for being a pretty good movie and story after that, but not a career defining performance.
