The 2nd WW seems like ancient history to some
The 2nd WW seems like ancient history to some , but I feel we need to remember the sacrifices & bravery it took to live in those times. This story gives us a picture of the home front , how lives were suspended ( dreams , careers, relationships ) I feel anxious when reading about those tumultous years even though I know the war ends & who the victors were. All Britain is involved in war effort to save their country from the evil that has built up as a result of the after math of ww! . Life has been changing rapidly for the 1st quarter of the new Century. One of the struggles is women's right to vote. As women realized they could be part of the changes they took on non traditional roles. The 3 young girls /women featured are just beginning lives of independence & are anxious to prove to them selves what they can accomplish in life. They become the 3 wise monkeys , who forge a bond that will last a lifetime. They support each other & the owners of the farm through the war & do the work needed to keep supplies in production for the country. I enjoyed seeing their ties become strong with each other & so many from their past & future .they are from different experiences that bring them together with strength & face their vulnerabilities . Yet they are strong independent individuals

Informative book told in diary format by a young woman during WWII.
I found this book to be a nice surprise. It has less than l40 pages but those pages are full of interesting details about the home front in England during the years of WWII. It was interesting how the young girls grew up in that time frame and how they coped with jobs, food shortages, clothes coupons and social settings. James is an excellent writer of the time period and I liked the way she kept the story moving without boring details. I will buy more books by James based on how much I enjoyed this one.

A wonderful book
The story was really great and I could hardly wait to get to the end to see what the future held for all 3 girls and it didn't disappoint me. A story of war times and sacrifice and friendships never to end. A splendid ending which took many turns but, well worth the wait. Read this book as I know you will enjoy the hardships, laughter and love set in the background of WWII. A must read!

This story is about three girls who come together as land worker on a farm during the second world war, but the characters and the plot are too contrived.

The first 75% to 80% of the book is interesting and well-written
Although the book starts off well, I got the impression that the last 20% to 25% of the book was rather irrelevant padding that was added simply to make the book longer than it needed to be. The first 75% to 80% of the book is interesting and well-written, but I found the remainder rather boring and unnecessarily long-winded. I think that the first first 75% to 80% is well worth reading, but I would recommend that potential readers skip to the very last chapter when the text begins to appear boring after the end of the war.

So sorry to get to the end
This story was so warm, amusing, tough and factual all at once. I was really sorry when I read the last page as I had totally immersed myself into the lives of all the characters. A rare treat and I hope Rosie James has many more delights for me to read.

Don't bother if you're after something new.
Couldn't get into this at all, as a person from Bristol it was hard to ignore the attempts at typing the accent, and there were also frequent typographical errors through the rest of the book. The POV jumped between characters so often that it was hard to keep track of what was happening. Considering one of the characters is an aspiring novelist being told to 'show not tell' the author would do well to follow their own advice. It felt like an attempt at fan fiction based on other novels I have read, nothing new here, just another attempt to cash in on nostalgia.

Letters to Alice
Stunning. I'm so glad that Ms James gave Alice the space and time to grow and the tumultuous times she lived in to weave their way through her life. This is a grown up novel, not a quick and easy romance. There are so many books that can be read in one day and forgotten the next. Letters to Alice isn't one of those, take it slowly and fully appreciate the many layers offered by this wonderful novel. I won't forget this one for a very long time.

Brilliant book.
Brilliantly written book it keeps you guessing from start to finish as to how it's going to end, this is the first book I've read by Rosie James and certainly won't be the last.

Easy read but disappointing regarding the historical background.
Much too starry eyed view of what it would have been like to be a land girl. There was little feel for wartime conditions and I doubt whether VE day celebrations on any small farm would have included wine unless it was home-made. I was disappointed but it is an easy read with likeable characters.

A wonderful story
Beautifully written with humour, sensitivity, and insight. The characters are so real you can hear them. The description of life as a land girl so clear you can visualize each day and chore. The ups and downs of wartime Britain vividly displayed at your fireside in this book.

Letters to Alice
I read this book for hours - after I should have been asleep!. Domestic feel, with a historic background. The characters were betrayed beautifully. I loved them all. Thank you, Rosie James.

An easy holiday read but not one that will stick in ...
I found the main characters irritating and the story line very predictable. An easy holiday read but not one that will stick in my mind now I've finished it.

Captivating
I don't often write reviews, however the book was so compelling that I felt I had no choice. A lovely read from beginning to end, I felt a part of the events in a way not many books can achieve. A must read for anyone who loves stepping back in time.
