affordable color printer
This is my first Brother inkjet after a lifetime of only buying Canon inkjets. So far I've been very satisfied with the printer. I had the whole printer set up and printing in under 15 minutes. The installation process on my Mac was pretty easy, although I had to download an update first and download the iPrint app from the App Store. The printer has already updated itself with new firmware too -- I really like that it can update itself.I am connecting via WiFi. It's pretty fast at printing. It's somewhat noisy when printing, but that's not really a problem for me because my printer is hidden in a closet. I can't speak yet to ink life, but it's easy to monitor this in the iPrint app as well as on the printer. And I like that you can set up the printer to automatically order new ink via Amazon Dash. Color quality is good but the colors aren't quite as vivid as they are on my Canon which this replaced. However the color tone was very close, and I have printed some photos which look good, so I would say the colors are indeed accurate. Coated paper would probably make these colors pop more, but I haven't tried this yet.I have used the scanner a lot and really like the document feeder. This was one of the main selling points for me. It works well except for color accuracy. When I scan documents with blue text, like a signature, it comes out teal. And dark blue on a W2, for example, also comes out teal. This may be related to saving scans as PDF with OCR, since this can sometimes change the document, but I haven't tested to confirm this and I have not tried scanning a photo. There are no color adjustments for the scanning in the iPrint software.Overall I would recommend this printer. It works well. It has a lot of features, and good Mac support.

Nice printer - horrible instructions
If you buy this printer - try this first, it will not hurt anything and might save you a lot of frustration. Brought the printer, installed it and its driver per the "quick start/" instructions - it printed a "test page" so I thought it was good-to-go. I was wrong. It refused to print anything. It held all print jobs in "preview" and would go no further. Nothng I tried worked, I mean nothing. it was set as the "default printer" all old printers drivers were removed. it was hard wired to the laptop (Lenovo) and still nothing. My last option was to uninstall the printer driver and reinstall and hope that worked - glad I did not.By pure chance a friend was on the phne with her brother. She mentioned that I had a new Brother printer that was giving me issues. He said he had a brother too, loved it and told me to forget using the CD driver disc, and just plug in the printer and let the laptop discover it on its own. He had done that, and it worked perfectly, and he had a Chromebook. So I did it, and my printer works great. Its copies, prints, faxes, scans everything. So my suggestion, plug it in, turn it on, and let your computer discover it. Keep the driver CD in a drawer. As for the printer, it works great, prints very quickly, and the touchscreen is convenient. I also like it that the paper supply is not hanging outside the printer. It's not an inexpensive printer/scanner/copier/fax, but it appears to work V-well. Not able to evaluate its long-term performance as its still new. UPDATE Jan 2025 - the printer has now developed what I describe as an alignment issue (and NOT correctable by the maintenance cue). It still scans fine & faxes (which almost nobody does anymore. But when it prints at least two or more lines are unreadable - the letters jumbled as if the print head or paper was moved just as it tried to print. I've tried everything I know and no solution. So, it's a new cheap printer I can toss in 5 years after spending $$$ on ink. Never had a printer last over 5 years, none, Lexmark, Epson, HP & now Brother.

Quirky design choices, but performs reasonably well
I've only used this printer for a week, and in a wired configuration (Ethernet). My reason for purchasing is that it's compact and Brother has a reputation for low print costs. Other models I was considering have an output tray that takes up extra room that i didn't want to waste. The print/scan quality & print speed is acceptable.I'm used to Canon models recently, and the Brother seemed less refined. Canon has very clear instructions, and this Brother model does not. It wasn't clear at all on how to make the Ethernet or USB connections. You have to open up the printer, as if to access the print head, and thread the cable inside the thing (use the tabs on the side of the printer and pull up). Why can't they put the port outside the printer as virtually everyone else? Also, the hinges on the scanner bed's lid seemed rickety. I guess we have to be careful with it, but we will most likely use the document feeder on top. In general, the build quality is not refined. I'm fairly certain Steve Jobs had no hand in designing this.Next, the ink tanks sit near the outside of the printer - not on the print head. I guess this might help with print head reliability with users not mucking with it, and it's more convenient to change the ink cartridges. But it seems to require the ink to travel much further to get to the print head. Besides the waste of ink, I'm wondering if there is the risk of the ink drying up inside the path to the print head, and clogging things up? Again, Canon has the ink cartridges sitting right on the print head, so these concerns are not there. As of now, I have no data that this is going to be a problem, so I am rating it per its current condition. One star off for sub-par instructions, inconvenient wired connections and build quality.
