Fills Out the Getter Trio
The original Getter-2 and 3 were some pretty forgettable designs. Getter-1 was definitely the best designed of the three but if I had my wish, I’d prefer having the robots from Getter Robo G including Getter Dragon, Liger and Poseidon. Still, I can appreciate Bandai finishing off the original trio and the Getter Robo G trio was already released in 2003 as GX-18/19/20. Bandai also released the original Getter Trio in 2001 as GX-06 but this is a completely different design and not a rerelease. GX-91 was released in Japan in January 2020 at a cost of around 25,000 yen or around $235. I got mine off Amazon for $225 and the current price as I write this review is $250.Getter Robo was somewhat unique in the it was three vehicles that could combine into three different robots depending on what the pilots needed at the moment. I don’t know if any company has legitimately tried to simulate this combining but in the animation it looks completely unrealistic. The Soul of Chogokin GX-06 was slightly more modular but looked like junk compared to this new release and made no attempt at combining. The only transformation element that exists in the GX-91 is in the robot portion of Getter-3 which can be easily detached from the tank portion. This was probably only done to make packing easier.Getter-2 and3 are about as boring in person as they look in pictures. Getter-3, in particular, looks downright goofy with a truncated body sitting on a tank. What I won’t deny is that the two are absolutely anime accurate so if the design is weak it’s the fault of the original creators. What I don’t think can be denied is that they have the same high quality that the Soul of Chogokin line is known for. They are part of the of the DC line which generally means die-cast exteriors with plastic joints. As far as I can tell the legs and torso of Getter-2 are die-cast while everything else is plastic. The robot body of Getter-3 is all plastic while the tank body appears to be all die-cast. The wheels are plastic and the treads are rubber.Despite his gangly appearance, Getter-2 actually stands very easily. It was smart of Bandai to give the figure light, plastic arms so they don’t throw off the balance. Getter-2’s head looks like it would be limited to swiveling but he actually can lean his head way back as he would do while flying. Overall, Getter-2 is about as good as your going to get given its original design. Getter-3, obviously, has zero chance of topping over and his design makes Getter-2 look downright masterful in comparison. His neck also has a very surprising amount of range and the tank treads do move although they are very stiff. Personally, I wouldn’t play around with them much and if there’s any part of these figures that will degrade over time it will be the rubber treads.I’m thrilled to now have a complete set of all the original Getter Robo robots but as far as design goes Getter-1 is definitely the standout figure. None of the blame lies with Bandai because they have pretty much nailed the reproduction. Bandai went above and beyond including lowering Getter-2’s center of gravity and having a surprisingly wide range of neck movement. The paint job is immaculate, and all the joints are tight and smooth. These aren’t the most aesthetically attractive robots I own but they certainly capture the original look to a tee.
