Lobo 1

Not the Lobo I love
This new Lobo is ok, not great or terrible. But considering I used to laugh my butt off reading Lobo in the 1990's, how those comics were fun and escapist pleasure, this serious and humorless series shouldn't replace it. It would have been better off as a completely new character. Lobo is a brand name, one that makes me smile just seeing in print on a comic book. I'd like the brand to keep going as it's always been, it was just fine that way!

Why? Why ruin Lobo?
Ok. There are some characters that are iconic because they are defined by over the top humor and violence. Marvel has Deadpool and DC has Lobo. This reboot has gutted everything fun about the character. Imagine if Deadpool was rebooted as a mute hero that never talked - that'd be moronic right? - because the characters brand is based on witty and funny conversations. Well here the main man was rebooted as (I think another reviewer nailed it) an angry emo. The entertainment value is basically gone for me. I have never read Lobo expecting it to be like Batman or something- I read it because it was different. Well, I won't be picking this series up again

IF YOU LIKE THE FIRST LOBO, DON'T BUT THIS
Do not buy this book. This is nothing like the original Lobo. This new guy is some kind of a poetic artist that acts like he's staring in a reality show. Please don't waste your time or money.

Needs work. Not perfect but overall enjoyable. (no spoilers)
For starters, i'm not one of these people who will hate the book, and not give it a chance solely because they changed the character(whom they established it was a different character anyway). Matter fact, I'm a fan of a redesign. If you ask me, it was needed. It was a great move and I personally wouldn't want them to change it. The new look was exciting, and the new take on the character's back story was compelling. Added layers to the character he normally wouldn't have got otherwise. As for the book itself, it's not perfect, especially in the beginning but it slowly picks and gets more and more enjoyable the more you read and I overall ended up quite enjoying the book though a little disappointed because there was so much potential there, that was not met. The flaws in this book mostly have to do with the dialog in the beginning of the book, and the execution of the back story and in some other aspects of the book. One of my biggest complaints though may sound minor was really bothersome for me, was some of the dialog choices. I know this book was written about 2011 or so, but the dialog in the beginning issues mostly, are very corny. Almost unforgivable corny. It's not super dramatic action movie corny but corny as in lobo saying "sorry not sorry" like some sassy pre teen girl. That might not be a issue for a lot of people but it certainly was an issue with me when i have hung out with some cool young girls years ago that used to say that a lot and it's cool when they did because they were sassy girls and did so in clever and funny ways at times. The way it's conveyed here is like a writer that caught on to that trend by seeing those girls, and had lobo say it to make him cool but it made him come off as a little girl that was trying to copy the girls i could hang out with years ago. it's pretty unforgivable pieces of dialog and i can forgive a lot. Aside from those pieces of the dialog, the only other issue I had with the book was some of the execution in some of the writing. The way they start off this in beginning of the book is that they bum rush you with a whole bunch of action gore and guts right away, without any real weight behind it which almost seemed like they were doing to so to be "cool". A lot of it it's just pointless gore and guts, and made some of the beginning action scenes very thin. Don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of violence and i'm down with carnage but the way it was handled was very weightless. Had no point. no threat. no weight and the blame for the mostly has to be due to some of writing but credit to credit is due, there is a lot of action later on in the story that really start of have some weight and suspense behind them and the violence and carnage feels a lot more earned which in turn made the book a lot more enjoyable to read even after the rocky start because it really felt like they started to find some footing. The only other issue i had with the execution had to with some of the back story we get for the character. Though the premise and idea is compelling and handled fairly well for the most part, but when we get start to get a better understanding of what happened, it goes from 0 - 100 real quick. Like everyone out of no where went from one state of mind to something completely different, and we are supposed to just buy into that this changed happened like that without much set up for it. The way i equate it to is star wars episode 3 revenge of the sith. It is like when anakin was a loyal jedi knight all through episode 3 trying to do the right thing but after some point, he turns and starts killing little children. That's kind of what happened here. The way it was executed wasn't handled very well, and i didn't believe that this same character in this story would make such drastic changes like they did in the story so when the change came, it doesn't feel like it was earned. It felt more so that they had to get through this story. So aside from those 3 flaws I had with the book, i really enjoyed reading this book despite it's flaws and it has a lot going for it. It was a very easy read. You could probably skim through this book in about an hour or so and a lot of it's a lot of fun and i think making changes to his back story was a great move even if it wasn't executed the best in this book. It added a lot of dimensions to the character that we might not have usually got from the older lobo so that change was appreciated. The art was pretty solid, even great at times. There was even a surprise cameo that was handled pretty well. Probably one of the highlights of the book. and the way the book ended was a lot better than what it started and i feel like they are headed into the right direction. Despite over all enjoying this book, i can't help but to think that this book could've been much better, if they had a different writer. There were times where i felt like this book was directed at young girls, and i feel like this character really would've benefited from a different writer that would make this character ruthless cold, and a lot darker. That i think is what this series needs. It needs to take the character to darker places, give the character some compelling and rich layers while still keeping him dark, and the writing needs to be executed better and I think you could truly have another great solid character and comic for the DCU. This was definitely a fun, enjoyable, action book. I'm not sure I would recommend someone pay 10 dollars for it personally, but that's not to say that there aren't a lot of people that can't find enjoyment in this book. I did but i'm not sure i would say that it was worth 10 dollars. I think this book could've been handled better and should've been but it seems like it's going in the right direction. I really enjoyed the later issues with the book, and hope they keep going in that direction because i wouldn't mind seeing more from this series and being handled a little better. There is a lot of potential there, waiting, but it was not met with this book for me despite having a good time with it. If i had to rate it out of 10, it'd be 6.5. Needs a little bit of work but theres some enjoyment to be had and there's a lot of potential there for some rich stories to tell.

Not your Daddy's Lobo...
Wow, was this ever a surprise. Here I was expecting yet another reboot destroyed character, cut down to size and presented to us as the one and only option for fans without any hope of seeing the character we know and love ever again (Wally West). But seriously, imagine my surprise when the very first page starts with the new Lobo getting into a knife fight with the original Lobo; as a reboot should be, it's not the character presented to us as the same character (again Wally West), but a new character taking (quite forcibly) the mantle. As for the story itself, several alien bounty hunters have been hired to take out planet earth and Lobo who usually wouldn't care either way, is hired to take them out first. Along the way he meets fellow hired help, a figure from his checkered past and picks a fight with another dead planet surviver, the Man of Steel himself. And all through out we're shown through flashback how this Lobo came to be, in an origin story that's both sad, incredibly bloody and surprisingly well drawn, the art for these scenes is truly top notch. This was a fun book to read, the origin story is the real draw for me, but seeing the new ways Lobo takes out each threat that comes his way as well as quips he makes is just a delight. Who of thought the guy had a code against killing dogs. It's a good story with an even greater story spread throughout. Really, I'd go as far as to say this story deserves more attention than it gets.

WHAT THE FRAG?
As a longtime fan of the main man, the prospect of a return (reboot?) of the baddest bastich in the universe was hotly anticipated. Sadly this is not what I was expecting. Other reviews have described its shortcomings more eloquently than I. Suffice to say, "Fetal's Giz what a total frag up!"

Loved it.
Beautiful art. Bad ass story. Been chasing this for my bf for ages. Always found second hand Lobo books. I'm so glad I found this. He loved it.

just the beginning
Erinnert mich sehr an DMC (devil may cry) und macht spass beim Lesen. Kann keinen Stern abziehen.
