Smithsonian Civil War: Inside the National Collection

Articles to reflect on
In my opinion, the "back stories" for the items selected, are well-written and reflect on the conditions (economic, social, political) of the times. Makes you think about the conflict(s) and similar conflict(s) in our times as well. Hope it doesn't come down to another tragic war as the Civil War was. So, again in my opinion, reflect on those past events and try to "season" our thoughts and feelings and turn down our tempers. The tangled web that was the Civil War conflict should always be a reminder to slow down, be responsible, respectful (of others' views), and resourceful to avoid another serious catastrophe that this book describes in detail.

Very yankee sided.
This book is well made and would be a good 'coffee table' type of book. It has good pictures (but I suggest a copy of Fighting Men of the Civil War and it's 2nd on the commanders). However, if you are Southern, look elsewhere. It is typical yankee sided propaganda. I will be selling my newly arrived copy.

Smithsonian Treasures
There have been a great many illustrated volumes produced for the Civil War sesquicentennial celebration, but this book ranks among the very best. Turning its pages and viewing the full color illustrations is the next best thing to rummaging through the basement of the great Smithsonian. I really cannot say too much about this book. All of the great artifacts are here and the text that explains their meaning is well written and concise. This is one of the best illustrated collections to appear in years. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the Civil War.

Great photos and context
Given as a gift to a Civil War memorabilia collector. He said both text and photos were outstanding.

Smithsonian Civil War Collection
This is the best book ever with regard to seeing the Civil War. I've read many good books about the history of the Civil War but with the items pictured in this very large book you get a better sense and feel of the things they used and the clothing they wore. No matter how many times I sit and go through this book I find something new. It is a must have for your Civil War library.

A Civil War Gem!
This book is awesome! You get a real good look at some of the Smithsonian's museum artifacts in this book. The pictures are great and the detail is super. It's a larger book but it's not expensive. A must for any Civil War enthusiast.

Not for Kindle. Too small.
Pictures and personal letters cannot be seen well or read, even with magnifier glass. Why all the pictures of the guns and knives? Not interesting. So much more could have been done with wartime espionage, medical experience ,etc. Written by men for men.. I know you have more than this in the Castle's exhibits.Have other Civil War books hard copy. Glad I didn't spend more on this one.

a fine choice for the civil war buff!
The book is sealed and ready for shipping. Inside the book is like visiting the Smithsonian institution. Each page offers in order of the war some of the most important items. Small enough to hold and read. Larger than most books to offer a glimpse at the exhibit. Would make a good library or coffee table book.
