The top row can hold up to a 12-inch knife, the 2nd row can hold up to an 11-inch knife, the 3rd row can hold up to a 10-inch knife, the 4th row can hold up to a 9-inch knife and the last row can hold up to a 8-inch knife. Very useful, solid and well designed
I finally replaced an old knife block that came with a cheap set of knives many years ago. First I tried the Shenzen block that was highly reviewed and supposedly held more knives. That was awful with steak knife slots that were too narrow for even a butter knife. I sent it back and ordered this Enso 17-slot block.This is terrific. It has six steak knife slots that hold my extra wide steak knives (1-1/8"). I also very much prefer the steak knife slots are vertical rather than horizontal. I have several ceramic knives and this reduces the likely of snapping one when grabbing a knife handle.All the slots are wide enough to hold real knives. (Maybe not a big cleaver but not some I need.) Left and right side slots are slightly offset to reduce handles hitting each other. It doesn't have the horrible odor the other block did and the cuts for the slots are cleaner and more even.I'm sure you can find a better block for two or three times the price of this one but after using it for awhile it seems like it's probably the last block I will ever need to buy.

Perfect for longer knives
I needed a block capable of holding 10" chef's and bread knives. This one works perfectly. Very efficient layout of the slots, and the spaces for the steak knives are a nice bonus to reduce counter clutter. Fit and finish are good, the Acacia wood has a wonderful golden tone. Very satisfied with this block.
