Legitimately life changing
The impact of this book cannot be overstated. One read through it was enough to provide clarity and understanding about what was going on, while providing the foundation for a life changing no-alcohol commitment. You or your loved one may choose further or additional support. Starting with with this book, or adding it to current efforts, is certainly a good idea. Please give it a try.

Definitely worth reading
For anyone who is experiencing alcoholism directly, or as a bystander, or for even someone who just wants to understand the disease and suffering better, this is a must read. The latest edition includes many stories of how people were able to pull themselves back from the brink of death (after much self and family destruction), and lead a happy, fulfilling, spiritually-enhanced life with family, friends and work, thanks entirely to A.A. and all the alcoholics involved. To see what people go through as the alcoholism grips them even tighter in its deadly vice, and squeezes every last drop of health, happiness and humanity from their bodies and souls, is heart rendering. But to finally understand that this really is a disease that isn't curable just by will power, and that the sick alcoholic really does need help that cannot seem to be provided or accepted by anyone who has not experienced the nightmare directly (first person direct) makes it somewhat easier to understand. It was amazing to see that all of the stories seemed to have a common thread and the people, common traits. Withdrawing, fear of rejection, lack of self confidence, anger from past traumatic events, and so many more similarities all hit home. Understanding also that alcoholism is non-partisan and affects everyone regardless of wealth, intelligence, class in the same way was a real eye-opener. I would like to have seen a bit more from the perspective of people dealing with alcoholic family members as that too can be destroying, but those are stories for Al-Anon, I guess. Accepting that there is a power greater than ourselves and that we cannot fix everything alone is key to a healthy life. Unconditional love for self and others, forgiveness, and service are also essential as we are not "islands". Humans are social creatures and alcoholism can force a destructive anti-social attitude on anyone. Love. Gratitude. Appreciation. I am very glad this book was recommended to me and even happier that I read it!

No more wasting money on alcohol
AA delivered in your face - no diplomacy, no nonsense. If you're looking for a way out of alcohol, this book will make sure you don't relapse. I highly recommend this book and it did work for me. I'm in recovery, surprising the hell out of my friends. There are so many advantages to living alcohol free - saving money, gaining respect, better focus, easier workout and best of all - healthy organs. This body and mind is a gift - make the best out of life by staying away from booze. If I can do it, anyone can! Regarding the book, these are classic stories. Something like an interesting share in an AA session, if you've ever been in one. I got the Kindle version so that I can look up word meanings instantly. Your vocabulary is sure to improve multifold. In simple words, AA stories are non-goofy illustrations of the horrors of numbing the mind. It could be that one last thing to save you from asking for that one-last-drink. These days, I do give company to my friends in the bar but I'm not worried about temptations. I'm happy to say that I would never again have an alcoholic drink in my life. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an alcohol problem. If you know an alcoholic, gift this book to him/her so that you can save one more life (and probably their family as well). Enough fun - time to get that healthy sleep that we deserve.

Saved my life at start, then TOO MUCH GOD, so moved on
I have to give it five stars for its role in the beginning of my recovery. It was a lifesaver. But then atheists and agnostics have to question the 12 steps because six are about god. The fact that this questioning process is resisted by today's AA organisation, even though the original author expected wordings to change as time progressed, gives rise to criticism as a cult. As the alcoholic's sobriety develops, the big book turns from lifesaver to lifespoiler. It would be more healthy for members to reinterpret and rewrite their own twelve steps as their lives blossom. Thankfully there are books that reflect this healthy approach like An Atheists Unofficial Guide to AA - for Newcomers: 2 by Vince Hawkins. Also, for programs other than alcoholism there is An Atheists Twelve Steps to Self-improvement - To accompany any Program
