The Scrabble Word-Building Book: Updated Edition Mass Market Paperback – September 25, 2007

Well worth the price. I love this book!

My MIL and I play a lot of scrabble. We have a dictionary from 2013. Didn’t want to spend a lot for more words when I can buy this and learn something too. It doesn’t weigh near as much as the dictionary.

No dislikes. Used the book in our game playing and found it useful.

I play WordFeud with about 25 people worldwide on line. I loaded the game on my PC while others play the game on their Android phone. My PC game screen is 8x11 inches. I grew up playing Scrabble with family tournaments all weekend and on vacations at home during college and subsequent military service. Always a fun family competition the Scrabble books spent a lot of time in each player’s lap as we fervently searched for words to play. Family rules were you could peruse the books but not hoard them. Now that family dynamics have changed drastically (everyone died) and I am on my own, my family rules (the cats and I) are use the Scrabble Word Building Book as much as you can because you can!!I loved it so much I got 2 more copies for local friends I play WordFeud with. Now we all started the New year 2014 on a level playing field. Each of us uses the book and our games are getting more interesting, challenging, and fun. Strategy in tile placement is very important and this book helps immensely. Gone are the days of Mom saying as she took my spot for QOPH or ZA, “ If I cannot use it? I will abuse (block) its use.” Thanks Mom. Now I play for the fun of word play and usage. Points are important only if the game is a close one. This book is my Bible. Wonderful investment in keeping this aging brain active and challenged. My brain gets so fried playing friends throughout the world on my PC, that watching television is actually a relief so it can relax. I do not hear Mom saying “TV will rot your PhD brain cells.” Nope, Mom, my PhD brain cells are quite active, thank you. Enjoy.

The important thing to note is that I have the Kindle version of this book. This means things are a little different for me than for someone who owns a physical copy. The book is great for checking to see if a word is valid, but less useful for looking for word ideas, due to the fact that you can't quickly page through it. When my family plays Scrabble we play it more for fun than for a challenge, so we allow each other to flip through dictionaries to look for word ideas. You can't really do that with this book on the Kindle, because you can't change pages very quickly. Yes, you can search for a word, but you can't, for example, find if a word is spelled properly or not by easily checking in that section of the book. All you will find if you search is whether or not the word is in the book. It won't tell you words that are close to it, or help you find what you may be looking for, like you could with a physical book. Instead, you have to hit page next a lot to get to where you want to be.However, despite my problems with the book, I can definitely recommend it. I still love having it, as it's a great addition to the game. I still use it constantly, it just takes a bit more effort on my part to use. This is in no way a fault of the book. Instead, it is a problem with the medium in which I received it. And even with those minor issues, I still feel that I would be worse off without it. So, in the end, I can definitely recommend that any Scrabble player picks this up!

Found words I didn’t know.

My wife and I have started playing quite a lot of Scrabble for evening entertainment. We "cheat" a lot because we want to learn words, and it has been very effective at helping with that. It is good for finding words that you can build from words already on the board. For example, look up "bout" and you find words like "about", etc. Very helpful. Of course, you wouldn't use it in a tournament, but that isn't our intent. We also bought the most recent Scrabble dictionary, and by using the two of them, we are learning a lot of new words.

Makes my Scrabble playing games more fun AND more competitive.

I use for help with crosswords, and when I am doing my codewords. Also when playing word games online with friends. Good purchase and good price.

You really need this if you want to make any progress with Words with Friends on Facebook!! I bought two more copies for my son and mother and now they are giving me a run for my money!!

Sensible size to carry with travel version of game

Great for my scrabble

I bought this for my sister. I have had a copy for many years and find it very helpful especially for extending words already played in Scrabble. The list of two and three letter words on the first few pages is very useful.
