Zion National Park Map (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map, 214)

Helpful, detailed map, but Zion trails are already very well marked and maintained.
I like it, but I honestly didn’t have to really use it once I was at Zion. All the trails are well marked and it’s almost impossible to get lost. The most helpful map is always the tram maps so you know what stop to take for each trail you want to do. The National park website has all the information you need, but I still like having such a nice detailed map at my finger tips! It could be a good plan B thing to have for any of the serious multi day/week/month adventure hikers out there. There are plenty of places in Zion with no signal, though GPS will work perfectly fine almost everywhere, except for the narrows. I didn’t test the water proof capability, even though I did have it in the water proof bag out on the narrows, that’s really just abmain in/out trail that follows the water, so unless you try to take a split trail in some places, you probably would just use the map to help you gauge where you are and how far you have to go. Can’t get lost on a day hike in the narrows unless your inept, but then you wouldn’t be hiking on the narrows that far if you were! Be careful though, it’s very easy to run out of water, even for the short hikes, because you shouldn’t drink the narrows water with all the algae blooms and waste in it and you’re going against the current in the beginning of most day hikes. Check the weather, the map can’t save your life if you get caught in a flood.

Not needed for a day tripper
I bought this map while researching a trip to Zion national park. We were only there two days and were in the main portion of the park. This map is a great map for people who want to get out of the main portion of the park.

Useful in the no service park
I bought this before my trip to Zion. It was helpful in understanding the overall park. I planned out what to hike each day by using this map.One thing to understand about Zion is that there is barely any cell service. Once I started hiking past the narrows, the path is somewhat there but there is no service beyond the paved portion. This map helps orient yourself. This map is also more expensive in and near the park. I suggest getting it here before going.

Difficult map to use - bad layout
You know, for an organization based on geography, Nat Geo makes some really lousy hiking maps. This is my third Nat Geo map (the maps aren't easily readable, but they have them for many locations), and my third disappointment. The map is printed on a plastic sheet, which is nice - you don't have to worry about water damage - and the print quality is very good. It has the makings of greatness, and yet the design & layout totally torpedo it.Nat Geo maps don't have trail mileage printed on the trails - instead you have to look it up in the WAY oversized legend that takes up a huge chunk of what could otherwise be additional useful map space (even if it's covering an area outside the park, it's still nice to be able to see nearby roads & such). The table of mileages is also cluttered with unhelpful information like approximate hiking time - I get that that could be helpful for novice hikers, but I feel like most people looking at back country maps have an idea of their pace and want to see straight up mileage and elevation. If you want to skip the mileage table and just measure the distance correctly, you can't because the map is in some stupid scale like 0.42":1.0 mi. I don't want to bring a calculator into the canyons and I don't want to be looking at the 1/8" marks on my compass ruler trying to think what 4.625"/0.42 is. The hikeable area of Zion includes a bunch of different classifications of land (the main park, wilderness, private rangeland, etc) but these are differentiated by a confusing set of very-similar zonal borders that often overlap and are difficult to discern. Finally - and this may be more an issue of personal preference - the two sides of the map are flipped vertically from one another, so to switch from one side of the map to the other, you have to flip it end-over-end. It's a much less ergonomic movement than flipping the map side-over-side (like a newspaper) and makes it essentially impossible to keep your bearings and flip between locations on two sides.I think this map was designed by graphic designers without real attention paid to backpacker usability. It's one of the only detailed maps of Zion I could find - and the only one printed on plastic, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I really love nat geo's trail maps
I really love nat geo's trail maps, this things can hold up really well. I had a stack of them out on this last trip through the southwest. Its not mine if I haven't spilled coffee on it yet apparently well knocked a cup over right on the maps at first I freaked out but after a quick trying and leaving in the sun the maps weren't even phased. As for the map itself, I carry them on all my hikes and haven't been disappointed when i have to use them on the trails. Another thing I use them for is planning my photography shots, it gives me a bigger picture of everything so I know what the terrain looks like, what direction each "viewpoint" is before I ever get to the parks

Good material, but trail locations are a little off
Convenient, with good quality paper that can survive getting wet.Unfortunately some of the less-popular trails aren't quite accurate. There were a few locations where trails were shown clearly crossing rivers, but the current trail always stayed to one side of the river. That initially made navigation once a pain, but after we learned to not fully trust the map, things went fine.Still, probably the best map I could have gotten out-of-state, while still being high quality + water resistant/water proof.

Excellent
Bought this for the extra coverage of the less popular canyons around Zion. Excellent quality and detail and fully waterproof.

The best maps!
The coating on them makes them super strong no matter how many times you fold them.
