Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy

Easy to Follow
I ordered this book for the Theories and Methods of Counseling course last semester. I was of course dreading the intense reading load that my Professor had in store for us, but I was surprised at how concise and organized this text is. Every chapter is broken down in relatively the same manner, and I loved how it broke down each major theory (such as humanistic, behavioral, psychoanalytic, etc.) into sub-divisions and founders/co-founders. As embarrassing as it is to admit that up until last semester, I kind of BS-ed knowing theories and the people involved with those theories, this text really helped me remember who did what, who founded what, who contributed to this and that. I would definitely recommend this text to anyone who needs a more structured, laid out format when it comes to this kind of material. The book did NOT come with the CD, but I believe on one of the first pages there is a website to go to that has the information to view the CD online. Luckily my professor let it slide when he realized 99% of the class did not get the CD.

Excellent book for the beginning counseling student
I bought this book for a theories class I am taking for a master of science counseling program. I wasn't sure how I would find this book but am glad that I purchased it. I found it to be an easy read but one that thoroughly explains the different counseling theories also touching on multicultural aspects. The book explains the theories enough so that the reader understands them in practice and application. This is one book I want to keep in my home library collection to refer back from time to time. I highly recommend this book for any beginning counseling student.

no stan dvd...no problem.
i'm studying for a master's in counseling degree. i won't keep all my books, but i will hold on to this one. if you simply MUST have the "case of stan" DVD, then i'm afraid you'll have to look for that package specifically, and purchase it new. my professor stressed we needed to buy dvd. however, you can find a good portion of the stan role plays on youtube. (btw, the new one with dvd is about $195). i didn't want to pay that much, so went with this one. and it has done the job just fine. in the book, at the end of the chapters, there is even a discussion of dr. corey's sessions with stan (a recap of what was on the dvd). i have had no problem. only two weeks remain in the course and i have a high "a" average.

Great content, terrible binding
Note: This review refers to the international paperback edition.FYI, I am a psychology graduate student (MA-MFT). I actually love the content in this text. It is a little dry at times (as is the norm for this type of text), but is very concise and well-assembled. Unlike many texts I have used in the past, this book utilizes a straight-forward approach to delivering the content, a high-level overview of the major theories used in contemporary psychotherapy. There are no ugly formatting issues, which plague many other texts I have used recently (what is *with* publishers these days, anyway? This is not a style contest. We want the information delivered to us in an easy-to-read, concise format without the gimmicks). If only all other texts were this "cleanly" formatted. Now for the bad news: the good news is the bad news has nothing to do with the content. I love this book, I really do. All I can say is, if you need to buy this for school, get the hardcover. I made the huge error of being penny-wise, but pound-foolish, as the cliche goes, saving a ton of money on the softcover, international edition (which I must admit costs less than half the price of the hardcover). Unfortunately, this book is too big for a softcover, and this is the cheapest possible material used for a softcover I have seen yet (and I have close to 100 textbooks). During its very first use, the front cover immediately tore away from the spine and began fraying along the bottom edge where it rested against my shirt as I read. Yes, really. I had to resort to wrapping ALL the edges of the front and back covers with clear packing tape to protect them. Yes, it looks awful, but I did not have time to return the text and get another one. I did not contact the seller, because, what can they really do?? I needed the text, immediately (have you been in grad school? Missing a few days of reading is enough to sink you for a semester, or put you seriously behind, anyway). So, love the book, hate the form factor. From here on, I only get hardcovers.

Great author, great read
I just happened to order the incorrect book, which is completely my fault. However, I could see that the book was in good condition, j know the subject matter and appeared to be relevant. I would recommend it because of the price also.

Misprinted Pages
So far, the content is great, but I have several pages missing. Not torn out pages, put misprinted pages. For example, page 211 is between pages 14 & 16, chapter 2 begins with pages 214 & 207 where pages 18&19 should be. There are more examples but itβs like that all through chapters 1&2.

Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy/ Corey
Excellent textbook. Easy to navigate through and clearly written without being tedious. Corey utilizes a specific case study presented at the beginning of the book, and applies each therapy protocol to this case so the student can compare and contrast techniques against a controlled client study. There is also a DVD package with new textbooks. Corey also includes a "Where to Go From Here" section providing information on clinical institutions with contact information, as well as excellent suggested readings pages full of references and significant author publications.

Great text book
I am a student in a Master's program and purchased this text book as it was required for class. However, I really, really, learned a great deal of information from it. It is organized very well and does an excellent job explaining various theories. It is the ONLY book that I haven't sold back at the end of the semester as I believe it will be an excellent book for reference in the future.

A must-read for all Counselors/Psychotherapists!
A truly wonderful book! The author's style of writing makes all the difference--so clear and coherent. It is easy to understand and has very important underpinnings of what it is to actually work in this field, rather than being too heavy on the theory and jargon of psychology (although it does have theory as well). Provides a useful tool for understanding how to employ methods of theory into actual practice. I highly recommend this.
