Gorgeously Illustrated Armenian National Tale
Beautifully illustrated Armenian national tale. Nonny Hogrogian has won two Caldecott Medals for her wonderfully illustrated books and it's for a good reason. The illustrations give a true sense of the Armenian countryside, with expressive main characters wearing national costumes. The grandma in the book was inspired by the author's own grandma and is not just very expressive, but also authentic, which I absolutely loved. For those who complain about fox's tail being cut - it's funny to hear this when there is so much intense violence in kids' media that no one seems to care about, Tomm and Jerry, anyone? It's a tale that has several layers to it - it teaches consequences, how everything is connected in this world, and how ultimately kindness is what saves the day. I bought all Nonny's books after reading this one!

A Book to Encourage Compassion
This is one of my favorite books for preschoolers! The fox has lost his tail. He is afraid his friends will laugh at him. He asks for help from many sources, but none will freely help him. Each has a condition the fox must meet before they will help. Finally the fox meets the miller. The miller freely gives the fox the grain - without asking for anything in return - because he is a good man. The fox then has what he needs to give what was required for each previous request for help so he can meet the condition for having his tail sewn back in place. That is a long run-on sentence which reflects the style of writing in this cumulative tale. With his tail restored, the fox can join his friends. Friendship is a big issue with four-year-olds. Compassion is a virtue we need to foster in our children. A fox tail cut from posterboard can be used to play "Tail, Tail, Who Has the Tail?" It is played the same way the classic game "Button, Button" is played. A card game where heads and tails of various animals are matched is a great follow up for this book.

For Mr. Fox: NOT a Fine Day
As you know, foxes are supposed to have tails. But this fox doesn't have a tail because he made a woman very angry and she chopped it off with a knife. How embarrassing! And she certainly will not sew it back on, no matter how much he begs and cries, until he gives her back what he took from her.But he can't. It was milk and he drank it. Still the woman insists: no milk, no tail. Knowing how his friends will laugh at him without a tail, the fox HAS to find a way to pay the woman back her milk. It won't be easy, but that's the fun of the story.Picture Book: Traditional Tale, K-2 The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

Amazing book, makes a great gift
One of the best books for children - crosses the ages. Beautifully written and illustrated. I’ve read it aloud to hundreds of children (I’m a Librarian), adults love it too, and it is a winner every time.

Not what I thought
I look for good books to read to our grandchild's kindergarten class and was not impressed with this one. My problem with it is the fact that the fox's tail was cut off as the result of a bad deed by the fox. Now I am not a person who thinks that children should never be allowed to play with toy guns or ever be exposed to painful situations, and I realize that the gist of the story is how the fox can right the wrong he did in the first part of the book. But for me, I don't like the violence of the act.

A review to praise a book to encourage others to read aloud
My 4 year old daughter loves this book and so do I. This is a nested story where each progressive element builds as the fox attempts to get his tail back from an old lady through bartering. The repetition allows a child to participate in the story. I like to pause to let my daughter fill in what each character needs in order to help the fox. The illustrations are vibrant and fun. Highly recommended for bedtime stories.

For my niece
I loved this book when I was little because I love foxes. I have an original hard cover with my brothers name, written by himself, in crayon that I thought would be nice for him to give his daughter. My dilemma was that I wanted to share this story with one of my friends children as well so, I purchased it online. Great quality, just like the original, but in paper back.
