from slavery to freedom
Well done movie conveyed the horrors of man treating man as less than human and the cruelty of the slave trade and practice across hundreds of years as well as the reality of slave owners siring children kept as slaves. It also highlighted the courage of ordinary people who made up the underground railroad and chose to follow what was right over the popular but wrong rhetoric of the day.The movie did an equally good job conveying the deeper message that souls who think themselves "free" may be in fact enslaved, and souls whom others condemn as "slave" may in fact be free. And that sometimes those we want to characterize as the "enemy" give us gifts we would never have imagined.Great singing interwoven throughout. I was a bit surprised at "it is well with my soul" being sung by Isaac Newton contemporaries since historically it came later but that didn't stop this from being a 5 star movie in my view.

A beautiful and soulful journey to freedom
As sad as the theme of this movie is, this story is beautiful. There is light shining on the darkness in this world because of Jesus Christ in, through and all around those who belong to him. These tormented yet precious souls will be rewarded in heaven. I am inspired and encouraged to continue to pray for this movie to reach everyone it is meant to. Although a movie, it is inspired by true events. Just as the Crucifixion of Christ is almost impossible for me to truly comprehend, the suffering of all slaves throughout history is hard for me to comprehend. Yet as I watch these stories played out, interestingly during black history month, I am keeping my focus on praying for the human trafficking situation and slavery still here on earth. And according to reported statistics, at an all time high. Shocking! I absolutely loved this movie. The music is lovely. The characters so soulful. Thank you to all who had a hand in this movie.

Inconsistet semi-musical about the song Amazing Grace
Freedom follows two stories. One is about a runaway slave in Virginia named Samuel played by Cuba Gooding Jr and his family who are attempting to escape via the Underground Railroad. The other is of John Newton played by Bernard Forcher who was a captain on a slave ship who wrote the song Amazing Grace. The two are connected because Samuelโs great grandfather was brought from Africa to America by Newton. What Samuel and his family go through trying to escape slavery is the highlight of the film. Oddly enough the movie is a semi-musical with black people randomly busting out in song. Hence Samuel gets mad and leaves and his wife busts out with a tune. If theyโd dropped that Freedom would have been much better. Thereโs also some real over acting in parts. Overall there are just as many low points as high in this film.

WELL PERFORMED GIVEN THE SCRIPT
THE BIGGEST OR LARGEST PART OF THE PROBLEM OF INHUMANE BONDAGE AND CRUELTY IS THAT IT NEVER ENDS. SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLDS, ON THE PLANET, THERE IS INHUMANITY OF A SORT GOING ON SOMEWHERE BUT IN OTHER PLACES ON THE PLANET IN OTHER WORLDS ON EARTH THERE IS DEFINITELY HUMANITY AND LOVE FOR GOD AND GOOD, NOT EVIL...NOT SORROW.

Ridiculously bad historical drama
I am just astounded at the number of positive reviews this movie has. Things get off on a very bad foot when early scenes show a mid-eighteenth century church congregation singing "All is Well With my Soul," a hymn that was written more than one hundred years later. And that is not esoteric information as the story of that hymn's creation is frequent fodder for Sunday School lessons and sermons. Worse, they reprise the song in a dream sequence. Cringe as a late 19th? early 20th century? locomotive engine pulls up in the mid 19th century setting. It's as obvious as if they'd used an Amtrak train. And when one character broke out into a contemporary (as in 20th century) song for no apparent reason, I just sat wondering whether I should continue. The answer was no, it only gets worse. There are actual stars you will recognize in this movie, and you wonder how much they drank making it. I couldn't tell whether Cuba Gooding, Jr., whose character is supposed to be angry and jaded, was playing a role or was really just that miserable. Yes, Black Lives Matter, so for pity's sake, don't make any black people act in a movie this bad again!

inspirational movie
this may not be historically accurate as some other reviewers giving it a low rating claim, however it does deliver a message and may inspire people to at least take an interest in the underground railroad and slavery as well as the stain on our country that can never be forgotten. only by facing our history can we recognize the injustices that we still have today and only by owning up to our past can we make any meaningful changes to inequality and correct something long past due .

Great Story Great Script
Fantastic message(s), great story, great script, great dialogue. The performances, especially musical were incredible. Some historical inaccuracies but nothing jarring to me. I did feel like the script was rewritten a number of times and was a bit unnatural in the end, in terms of story, but good nevertheless. There's so much more to these stories and this film only tells a small portion of it all. Again, I just can't get over Jubilant Sykes' voice; those scenes on the ship gave me more than chills.

Slavery Today
What a beautiful story. Such courage and hope. Such endurance and cooperation. We need this today. Women and men are treated as slaves in homemaker positions and told that they have no financial value. When this is not true. We do have financial value, although it is barter value. We need to recognize our value. People in all positions are made to marry for money instead of love or forced into isolation. We have a great need to fight against this slavery. "Freedom" gives me courage and hope that we can redeem ourselves and fight for freedom.

Good introduction to American slave trade for children.
There are quite a few of the 'Black history' movies on Amazon; most are very cheap and a good bargin. I purchase about four of them including this one. Freedom is not as hard hitting as Lena Baker Story or Birth of a Nation. Although there are some suspenseful scenes - the over all flow is quite polyanish and under mines the absolute danger and mindless cruelty of the American Slave trade. This is movie is still worth watching for friends who have not seen it and is a good gentle introduction for children's eduction for this terrible time in world history.

Slaves released from bondage.
I was given this DVD and so enjoyed it, bought it for others! It tells the story of slavery, with two stories intertwined. One of John Newton the slave trader, who eventually had a dramatic conversion and later served the Lord as a Pastor in Olney. The other story of a family escaping from a plantation in Virginia. It is based on facts and gives an insight into what slavery was like (although of course much worse than depicted in the film).

Good story. 2 different times.
Good but not great. Changed from one time to another as part of the story. Well acted and interesting.

Five Stars
Very moved. Forgiveness is the answer for healing, because Christ died for our sin of wounded pride and unforgiveness.
